Principal Justin McCarthy’s experience as a software engineer helps him now, in his work as a patent attorney. Find out more as we ask Justin four questions in our series for National Engineers Week:
1. What is your engineering degree?
“I have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.”
2. How did you choose this field?
“I’ve had a passion for programming computers since I first started programming my family’s Commodore 64 when I was six years old. I enjoy the challenge of breaking down problems into logical and sequential operations and providing instructions that execute those operations, as well as the challenge of digging through code to fix bugs.”
3. What is your engineering experience?
“I worked as a software engineer for five years at Motorola designing, coding, and debugging base station software that handled call processing functions for 2.75, and 3rd generation cellular networks.”
4. How does this experience affect how you help clients and inventors?
“As I primarily draft software patents, having the experience of actually designing and implementing source code means that I can more easily understand complex software inventions and architectures. In addition, my experience also helps me to ensure that the applications I draft are fully and accurately described.”
