Open Educational Resources (OERs) break down these barriers, by providing an inclusive approach to learning. Today, we highlight a talk by Toby Hodges, Director of Curriculum at The Carpentries–a community-led initiative that teaches software and data skills to researchers. He discusses strategies to increase the reach and impact of knowledge resources, by taking away barriers. Do have a wee read of this blog by Sharon Cox if you aren't familiar with the concept of Open Science. Personally, I've always had a kinda "for the greater good" theme running through every job I've had and open science is a huge aspect of this. This is especially important for many reasons but for me, personally, things it can help with include: getting the recognition for the efforts of your work, good use of public funds and even more important maybe, the avoidance of undertaking demoralising research where things don't show what you thought they would and finding out later that someone else already tried and failed (personal experience of my masters research project speaking there - 12hr growth curves still haunt me to this day) and instead allows research to build upon that which went before and thus advance science quicker! At #SatSummit, Open Science is an important topic, and this session was an excellent discussion covering the benefits and challenges of Open Science.
