🌊 Our Working Group on Open Ocean Aquaculture (WGOOA) "describes the evolution of the use of the term 'offshore aquaculture' and define the most relevant parameters to shift to a more definitive and robust term 'exposed aquaculture' that can inherently relay clearer information." A new publication is out! This paper describes the evolution of the use of the term “offshore aquaculture” and define the most relevant parameters to shift to a more definitive and robust term “exposed aquaculture” that can inherently relay clearer information. Adoption of this more definitive definition of “exposed” will allow the user to define a site with more than just distance from shore. Much of Africa's soil is depleted and could benefit greatly from carbon optimization. Join us in advocating for practices that enhance soil carbon, boosting food production, protecting our environment, and creating a sustainable future across Africa. Everyone has a crucial role to play - farmers can adopt carbon-building practices, policymakers can create supportive legislation, and consumers can choose products that promote soil health. Let's work together to restore our soils and build a greener Africa. Share your commitment to soil health using #SoilCarbonAfrica #FARA #AU #IFAD #EU #OCP #NAERLS #SustainableAgriculture #ClimateAction #AfricaFarming #AgroEcology
Dear Partners, I want to invite you to the scientific discussion on “Optimizing Soil Carbon for Agricultural Productivity and Ecological Services in Africa” The Hybrid (Physical and Virtual) discussion is organized by the Africa node of the ORCaSa Project as a side event in the Science and Partnership For Agriculture Conference, holding at the Lemigo Hotel, Kigali Rwanda. Yesterday, I attended a webinar on the 4th CAADP Biennial Review Report, focusing on the East African Community (EAC), organized by CAADP and Policy Link. It was an insightful session on "Transforming African Agriculture by 2025." What was on the agenda? 🌿 We explored how East African countries are progressing in creating jobs for young people in farming and agriculture. 🌿 Participants shared innovative ideas to improve agricultural development. 🌿 It was a great networking opportunity with fellow young professionals passionate about agriculture and development. The Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) is a vital Agenda 2063 initiative aimed at eliminating hunger and reducing poverty through agriculture-led development. By committing at least 10% of national budgets to agriculture and striving for a 6% annual growth rate in agriculture, CAADP targets reducing poverty and malnutrition, increasing productivity, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. The discussion focused on achieving the Malabo Declaration goals, with a major objective of halving poverty through agriculture by 2025. CAADP also supports resilience to climate variability through disaster preparedness policies, early warning systems, and social safety nets. A big thank you to CAADP and Policy Link for organizing such an enlightening session. Looking forward to many more! #Agriculture #Development #CAADP #EastAfrica #SustainableFarming #YouthInAgriculture #Agenda2063 #MalaboDeclaration

The COST networking Action EEL SUPPORT has met at the Mediterranean Fisheries Research Production and Training Institute in Demre (Antalya, Turkey) for her first annual meeting and it was absolutely fantastic! With big thanks to the local organizers, the enthusiastic participants and the expert speakers, in particular Dr Ijiri and Dr Sudo from Japan. EEL SUPPORT aims to solve bottlenecks in eel reproduction. The action brings together researchers in fundamental and applied sciences, industry partners and policy makers to share the state-of-the-art in eel reproduction, identify knowledge gaps, develop collaborative strategies to fill these gaps, and disseminate and communicate this knowledge. As such it will contribute to closing the production cycle thereby supporting sustainable aquaculture and management of natural populations. For more information, check www.wur.eu/eelsupport. We only just started, a promising start of the 3.5 years still to come! The COST Action EEL SUPPORT, CA22163, is supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). #eel; #cost; #eu; #wur

We just published an article with Karol B. Barragán-Fonseca about the production of insects in Latin America 👉 Surveys, challenges, and perspectives for the production of insects for food and feed. Our surveys show a growing interest in species like: → Black soldier fly → House cricket → Mealworm Entomophagy, the practice of consuming insects, is traditional in Latin American countries like Mexico, Brazil, Ecuador, and Colombia. However, insect production in the region is still in its infancy. It faces challenges in regulations, training, and collaboration. That is why, in the article, we present perspectives for insect production in Latin America, such as: 1. Accessible database 2. Setting quality standards and certification 3. Research for the optimization of ecosystem services 4. Conferences and exhibitions for the Latin American region 5. Guidelines for collaborative work with governments and institutions Excited to share the results from this article written with Karol. 🙌 🔗 Full article is open access, check the comments for the link. #EdibleInsects #Mealworm #BlackSoldierFly

Knowledge sharing is essential for the adoption of best agricultural practices. I supported the documentation of #slm practices across Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH's ProSoil countries in the WOCAT - World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies database. Farmers in Kenya, Ethiopia, India, Benin, Burkina Faso, Madagascar, and Tunisia have adopted these practices, leading to improved food security and enhanced conservation of natural resources. Find out more in the post 👇🏾
📣 Are you interested in tested agricultural practices, technologies and approaches for soil protection and rehabilitation from across Africa and India? 💡 Together with WOCAT - World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies we have recently summarized our best practices from different countries in eight country compilations. The compilations provide insights into the technical implementation of selected practices including the specific associated activities, inputs, costs and adoption rates. 🔎 Additionally, the compilations highlight the impacts and lessons learnt for each technology and approach. In total the 'Global Programme for Soil Protection and Rehabilitation for Food Security' with support of WOCAT documented 87 good practices in the global sustainable land management data base.
