Many producers and agents have a "sink or swim" approach to client service, instead relying on various disclosures reminding an Insured to read their policy and a glib "let me know if any questions or corrections...". In my experience, taking the time to translate that Rosetta Stone into plainspeak for a client ensures not only that they value you more as a professional, but also minimizes the time spent on that account. Understanding their policy and the coverage contained therein means the Insured is better prepared for renewals, mid-term servicing requests and coverage gaps that may arise during the term of their account with you. Sometimes, explaining the difference between an occurrence limit and an aggregate limit is already more than any agent has done for that Insured before. Learning how to read the Policy form and to review the Endorsements oneself is a game-changer for most, and it doesn't take very long! I'm constantly surprised by how many of my clients' prior brokers haven't taken this extra step. It certainly didn't hurt my referrals, either.
"Insurance policies are like an ancient text without a Rosetta Stone. 90% of UK adults struggle to understand them. But it shouldn't be that way. Insurance policies are meant to give peace of mind, not headaches," says Harry Croydon. Here's a marine insurance policy underwritten in London in English on 22 February, 1582. Who can decipher it? Hint: it's almost verbatim the same as the S&G policy used at Lloyd's until c. 1987. #insurance #reinsurance #insurancecommunications #insurancePR

It is impossible not to adore the English language. And so we, the assurers, are contented, and do hereby promise and bind ourselves, each one for his own part, our heirs, executors, and goods to the assured, their executors, administrators, and assigns, for the true performance of the premises, confessing ourselves paid the consideration due unto us for this assurance by the assured, at and after the rate of In Witness whereof we, the assurers, have subscribed our names and sums assured in London.
