With billions of tax dollars being spent on school security, many campuses are installing electronic door locks. The perceived advantage is that every door in the school can instantly be secured during an emergency. There’s one problem with these electronic locks that school officials may have overlooked: There is a $170 device sold online that can open them. Can a school with electronic doors be secured against a school shooter who can easily open them? Electronic hacking devices can cause problems for schools with: - Interior and exterior doors with access card readers - Guns and equipment stored in an SRO's office with an electronic lock - Electronic gun safes in classrooms and common areas - Wireless panic buttons - Admin offices, storage, and utility areas with electronic locks Aside from school shooting plots, there is a whole lot of mayhem and mischief that students can carry out with access to every part of the school building and control of any wireless device inside it. School officials need to keep track of innovative and disruptive products that impact school security systems. Luckily, you can subscribe and share these articles, and I’ll do my best to keep track of these trends for you.

The only viable solution to saving lives is to stop the bullets. School safety and security have been very hot topics for many years. We have seen many initiatives and approved funding for “enhanced security” but often these are stand-alone items. Recently, a school district in Minnesota approved funding for security cameras. As such, I feel the need to address the elephant in the room. It’s not enough. It will fail. Let me ask you a very simple question. Can security cameras stop a bullet? If you replied with “No, but…” It’s not enough. We live in a very reactionary society. School safety and security measures are often revised out of reaction to the most recent event. As more events take place, officials change and alter the protocols and react to the last incident. Let me make one thing quite clear; no two active shooter events are the same. So why are we treating safety measures as such? If a shooter enters through a non-secured vestibule and the reaction is to install a secured vestibule, then what would stop the shooter from entering through a window or side door next time? It has been 25 years since the Columbine High School shooting, and we have yet to establish an all-encompassing, multi-layered solution. Singular enhancements will fail. Security cameras are fantastic for catching and recording incidents for evidence, but they do nothing to physically protect the students. Security film on glass helps slow an attacker but it does not stop bullets. As we’ve seen with Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, security guards come with the possibility of human error or inaction. Individually, these solutions are not solutions. They will fail. The answer to providing safe refuge during an assault will not be singular enhancements but will require a multi-layered, multi-faceted solution that is in place, ready to deploy in seconds 24/7/365. The Shield Act, championed by MN rep Elliot Engen, is now part of legislation in almost a dozen states and follows a proven system that is installed and fully functional in multiple districts across the country. If we can identify troubled individuals, create bullet-resistant classrooms and secured entrances, add security technologies, add trained security officers, have strategic plans specific to that school, and ensure your staff is well trained and educated, then we will have systems that will have the best option for safety and security during an assault. When these systems are implemented in every school across the USA, only then will we stop seeing the loss of innocent lives in our educational facilities. The only viable solution to saving lives is to stop the bullets. Elliott Engen #safeschools #activeshooter #safety

Moving Beyond Traditional Hardware for School Access There has been an increase in the types of available access control solutions. There has also, unfortunately, been an increase in the number of school shootings. Therefore, more campuses are turning to new and improved safeguards. Safety should be a top priority for everyone, everywhere, and it is especially important within educational institutions. From whom can enter campus buildings to when and how, there is much to consider. The increase in school violence has led to the doubling down of plans and products put in place to protect students and staff. Already this year, there have been 29 school shootings that resulted in injuries or deaths. So, what can campuses do to enhance overall security? The Rise of School Access Control Currently, one of the top security trends is access control, which involves an overall system to secure a location. It manages access, based on specific credentials that may include key cards, PINs or biometric data like fingerprints. When combined with traditional security measures—such as mechanical locks and security guards—access control options take overall safety to the next level.
