So... it grinds my gears that I still so SO MANY job adverts for roles in technology (and particularly Cloud services) which "require" a STEM degree of some kind... most frequently, Computer Science is specified. The thing is that I have both Humanities degrees (Classical Archaeology) and an Engineering Associate's degree, and for the atcual *functions* of my job, I use precisely NONE of the *content* that I learned in either of those subject areas*. What I *do* use that those degrees helped me to develop are these skills and dispositions: * Problem solving skills * Stick-with-it-ness and resilience * Research skills * Knowledge synthesis writing skills * Communication skills Granted, University is a great place to learn these, but it's not the ONLY place, and having a closed-minded approach to the qualifications and experiences that you *think* will produce the Unicorn candidate of your dreams is depriving companies of great "non-traditional" candidates, as well as so many people of awesome work opportunities. Add to this that you're so much less likely to be able to access "traditional" academic education (and particularly STEM subjects) if you're from any kind of disadvantaged group or at the intersection of multiple, and you've got baked in social immobility thrown in for free. Take a look at the participation rates of women in Physics, Maths, or CompSci degrees, for example, and in specifying that you "require" a candidate to have that specific degree subset in order to be even worth looking at immediately cuts out almost half the population. So on the day when millions of 17 and 18 year olds will be receiving A-level results and turning heir thoughts towards further study and the world of work, let's start promoting a more open view of what kinds of qualifications, experiences, and backgrounds make a 'good candidate'. * Apart from when I am being a maths nerd for enrichment purposes only.

All great points from Women in Science Portland and Natasha Fowler, Ph.D. that covers so much of what I often get asked about how to transition from Academia to Industry. One thing I would add is network, network, network! Find ways to meet people that are not just through informational interviews. Go to events targeted at the life science industry (State Bioscience associations, like Oregon Bioscience Association, often host these). And leverage your network when you are looking for a job. In general, the industry is small and many people will know someone, or know someone who knows someone, at a company you are interested in. These connections can be crucial in getting past the first layer of resume sorting and help you get that first interview!

Career advice is hard right? Our dreams as children are often brought back to reality and we find ourselves in “realistic careers.” This is especially true in STEM careers. It is so easy to speak to someone in STEM, learn about what they do and say “I wish I knew that was a career.” In my latest blog article I discuss the disconnect in STEM between public engagement and its impact on those seeking career advice. https://lnkd.in/er4JMBhy #STEM #ENU #EdinburghNapierUniversity #OfFelautumn #Careers

What's the best advice you have for someone looking to land a #STEM job outside of #academia? This is a question I get all the time. And I recently had the honor of speaking with some postbaccalaureate #STEM fellows about this very question. In honor of them and other scientists looking to leave the bench, I present the latest installation of the Women in Science Portland 'A Scientist's Survival Guide' where I share some of the best advice I've received about landing a non-academic #science job. These tips are a compilation of advice I've received from 65+ STEM professionals from diverse backgrounds (BS, MA, MS, MPH, MBA, PhD) and careers who have successfully navigated the transition. While each professional had a unique career journey, much of their advice overlapped and is now the foundation for my own professional development. I'm happy to share it with you. Click the link below for the full list of tips. https://lnkd.in/g8YTNGvn For more advice, check out the 'A Scientist's Survival Guide' blog series on the #womeninscience website. #AfterthePhD #AfterAcademia #HirePhD #BeyondTheProfessoriate

Okay academia to industry people, what are our thoughts on translating academic titles to appropriate industry ones? Torn between being honest and wanting to get past ATS systems. For example a doctoral student using something like "Quantitive Researcher" over "graduate student" for example #phdcareers #jobtitles #datascience
