The only right way to evolve the marketing department at a startup (0 to $10M ARR): ✅ $0 - $1M: Founder-led marketing (test the waters, generate some buzz and find founder-message fit) ✅ $1M - $3M: Hire Head of Marketing (T-shaped generalist who will experiment a lot until you find the ONE channel) ✅ $3M - $10M: Hire 2-3 specialists (with core expertise around your ONE channel) Prematurely hiring a Head of Marketing leads to them leaving in 6 months 90% of the time. Both sides lose time, nerves, founders lose trust in marketing and marketers get very inspired to complain on LinkedIn about 'being forced to do things outside their job description'. All this can be avoided by following these steps.

Circle is hiring a Head of Marketing. Here's 3 reasons why I think it's a dream role 1/ The product I realized in my career that marketing can't help a shitty product. If the product isn't good, people don't want to buy the thing, no matter how much demand you create. But, that wouldn't be a problem at Circle. I use the product everyday to run Exit Five and I love it. They have a deep feature set and are adding new stuff every month to level up. Our community wouldn't be what it is without Circle powering it. 2/ The people I've had calls with people on their team and everyone has been so kind, passionate about the company, and smart. You can tell they are intentional with their hiring and everyone at the company is bought into what they're building. They are building something special and everyone at the company seems to know it. This is rare. 3/ The industry IMO, the key to building a strong community is by starting with a strong audience. It's hard to get people into a community without an audience. Nowadays, everyone is building an audience, so evidently, I think online communities will only become more popular over time. And, I see it firsthand in the Exit Five community. There's lots of creators and companies considering community and which platform is best to build on. --- I didn't talk about the actual job itself, but I'll let you read that in the job description. I'm hiring for a marketing individual contributor (IC) at Seer, don't have the job post up yet, but if there's one thing I'm looking for it starts with someone who refuses to put any content behind a gate for "emails" / MQLs. I want someone who feels at their best when they are earning email signups, where people give you their emails because you constantly dropped content bangers not because you came up with some "gift card giveaway" or other tricks, just straight value. You've gotta see gates and other marketing devices as friction you are the kind of marketer who doesn't put into the world gated content because you don't like forking over your emails to get other people's high quality content. You will need to come with examples of how you use valuable, ungated content to create wins. I'm looking for value over viral. Also, maybe you found a way to gate content and create value, would love to hear those stories and see that data too, we only learn when we are challenged, but so far I have yet to see a marketer show me gated content that didn't make me say...why not just put it in the world.

This is probably the most iconic scene showing what great product marketing can be. Yes, Don is amazing there... but what many people miss is that it also takes: - the right product, - in the right industry, - at right time to make room for this kind magic ✨ to occur. We believe that, for the right product marketer, Zowie is exactly this kind of a career-defining, industry-shaping opportunity. 1. We operate in an emerging market that hasn’t been defined yet - there isn’t a clear leader shaping how these solutions are talked about, there’s no established vocabulary, there are no best practices yet on e.g. what an AI Agent is, how to describe what it does, etc. This is an opportunity to invent and shape this vocabulary, the standards of communicating in this new field - including how others talk about this space, how they understand it. 2. Our product already robust enough that it's capable of winning customers away from large industry incumbents. 3. We're unafraid of taking creative chances. Few companies think seriously about Product Marketing at such an early stage and invest in it strategically. We do... and because of this we also won't constrain you in trying new things out.
