Plan A Consultants are increasingly seeing reuse on their projects. Plan A’s Technical Director, Simon England, attended London Build Expo this week found the sustainability discussions on Adaptive Reuse particularly insightful. Key takeaways from the panel discussion: Learning from the past: Simon Davis Ba(Hons) Dip Arch RIBA shared how revisiting one of RSHP’s 20-year-old projects revealed how even a 10% improvement in performance can make a big difference. As what was once cutting-edge is no longer so. 🏛 Historical context: James Allison reminded us that adaptive reuse is nothing new - dating back to Roman times where material scarcity drove repurposing long before it became a buzzword. 📖 Storytelling for impact: Debbie Ward emphasized that carbon isn’t tangible for many outside our industry. Storytelling can bridge that gap, making sustainability more accessible. 🌿 The Net Zero Standard: Alastair Donn highlighted the upcoming Net Buildings Standard and urged industry engagement in the consultation, with pilot projects offering valuable lessons. 💻 Balancing high-tech and adaptability: James cautioned against overly complex solutions that hinder future adaptability, pointing to Bennetts Associates’ ongoing research. ⚠ Heritage challenges: Nicola Forest raised the complexities of retaining fabric like windows in heritage buildings, noting the importance of developers potentially splitting the risks of building unknowns with contractors to enable reuse. Across the panel, there was a shared call to incentivise reuse, challenge the allure of "shiny new buildings," and shift perceptions. A strong vision, as James noted, is key to securing buy-in for sustainable approaches. #LondonBuildExpo #designmanagement #sustainability

𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 The sustainability of building value chains is by design. Circular economy principles for sustainable building design stress resource efficiency in construction to prevent and reduce construction and demolition waste and to re-use and recycle building materials and products. This document informs the participants in the building value chain about sustainable building design: (1) building users, facility managers and owners; (2) design teams; (3) builders and contractors; (4) product manufacturers; (5) deconstruction and demolition teams; (6) investors and developers; and (7) governments, regulators and local authorities. It is a bit cheeky to claim architects are not designers, but Ross Harding has some good ideas on how the built environment sector can reduce the 40 percent of the country’s solid waste currently produced - 'avoid demolition where possible; materials first; inform the supply chain" https://buff.ly/49ixVfv

At dotDWG, our passion for sustainable design stems from a deep commitment to creating a better world through architecture. Every building should positively impact the environment and the people who inhabit it. Why Sustainable Design Matters: Lowers Energy Consumption: Sustainable design reduces energy demand by incorporating energy-efficient features like insulation, optimised heating and cooling systems, and LED lighting. This cuts costs and decreases reliance on fossil fuels, helping to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Harnesses Renewable Energy: By integrating solar panels, wind turbines, geothermal systems, and natural ventilation, sustainable design reduces dependence on non-renewable resources, paving the way for a cleaner, more resilient future. Preserving Natural Resources: Sustainable architecture focuses on minimising the use of non-renewable resources. We prioritise the use of locally sourced and renewable materials, which not only reduces environmental strain but also supports local economies. Reduces Waste: Through careful material selection, recyclability, and systems like rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling, sustainable design minimises waste and conserves resources, significantly reducing the environmental impact of construction. Health and Wellbeing: Sustainable design is about more than just the environment—it’s about people, too. We prioritise using natural materials and design for optimal air quality, creating healthier and more comfortable spaces for everyone.
