As a logistician, I have always been fascinated by the transportation of various goods from point A to point B. My curiosity particularly extends to exotic foods and hazardous cargo. In Kazakhstan, one such exotic product is the avocado, which doesn’t grow locally yet has become increasingly popular due to the healthy lifestyle trend. I was quite surprised to learn about the high criminal involvement associated with this seemingly harmless fruit. A Business Insider video (https://lnkd.in/dttJJjk8) reveals how Mexican farmers have had to seek protection from local drug cartels or arm themselves as heavily as the local military. When it comes to importing avocados into Kazakhstan, this fruit is indeed costly, but the average price hasn’t fluctuated significantly over the reviewed period. However, there have been specific times when the price per kilogram more than doubled the annual average. Official trade data indicates a growing demand for avocados: in 2023, Kazakhstan imported eight times more avocados compared to 2018 (357 tons versus 44 tons). Looking at the countries involved, Mexico, which accounts for about a third of global avocado production, plays a minor role in Kazakhstan's imports and has almost stopped direct shipments in recent years. On the other hand, Russia’s share is increasing, although it doesn’t grow avocados. The Netherlands and Peru are significant suppliers, making up about 30-40% of the total imports. Israel’s share has slightly decreased during the reviewed period. Meanwhile, Turkey's avocado exports to Kazakhstan are on the rise, now reaching about 30 tons annually.
