Inspiring! . Earth has been alive for 4.5 BILLION years...mankind is only 140.000 years old! . I think Earth can teach us a thing or two about how to live sustainably! . If we just paid attention... . Can we humble ourselves to learn its ways? instead of forcing the earth to change into our unsustainable systems and behaviours. . We can start by changing the sustainable narrative... Earth doesn't need us to save it, it needs us to evolve, and I don't mean in technology, but as more evolved and wise human beings! https://lnkd.in/dCvjXNy6

There is much to be hopeful for in the UK theatre industry's sustainability progress in recent years, and I applaud those behind initiatives like The Theatre Green Book. However, as things stand, I'm a little more sceptical than some about our ability to reach net zero by 2030. If it IS going to happen, we’re going to need to make some big choices. 𝟭. 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 '𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲' 🌍: Achieving net zero will require a c.80-90% reduction in emissions across society, and this won't come from easy wins alone. The theatre industry must be prepared to make radical changes. We need to rethink what theatre will look like in the 21st century and be willing for this to be very different to what it is today. 𝟮. 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀 🌱: For those emissions that are truly unavoidable, we need robust support for carbon offsets through high-quality and durable removal projects. Currently, there are structural barriers that disincentivise this—for example, ACE project grants explicitly exclude the use of funds for offsetting. 𝟯. 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 🤝: Much of the theatre industry's impact is through Scope 3 emissions – ie, they’re beyond our *direct* control. We need to foster greater collaboration with other industries to address these emissions collectively, and not just see them as someone else’s problem. 𝟰. 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 🗣️: Engaging with audiences on sustainability practices is crucial. The overwhelming majority of cultural audiences support climate action (Act Green 2023 survey). This shouldn’t be work we do behind-the-scenes – it should be happening with the support and input of those who make theatre possible. 𝟱. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 💡: All theatres and theatre businesses are going to need significant investment in technologies that help reduce their carbon footprint. Public investment in this space is likely to be limited in coming years, and while we should loudly advocate for it, we’re going to need other solutions. We need to get real about the costs, and start thinking about where the money is going to come from. Almost every day I speak with people in the industry who are passionate about building a greener and fairer future, and that gives me so much hope. But I also believe the journey ahead will have to be less evolution and more revolution if we’re really going to see the change we need.
Theatre managers are "confident" theatres can reach net zero by 2030, but have called on the wider industry to account for unavoidable carbon emissions 👇

#Russia #Egypt #Ethiopia #SouthAfrica: I have no idea what these exchanges could mean going forward, especially regarding African participation. However, I continue to keep a close watch on BRICS activity in the context of "film industry" (my focus), especially as more African countries join the intergovernmental organization. Regarding African participation, the BRICS countries, which already included South Africa (the "S" in the acronym), added Egypt and Ethiopia to their ranks as of January 2024. And more African countries want to join. But what does it all mean? 🤷🏾♂️ As I shared here last month, representatives from the BRICS nations convened to discuss joint film productions and developing national film distribution networks. While no concrete plans were announced during the plenary, these are all noteworthy developments. The BRICS Film Festival kicked off Friday, April 19, 2024, in Moscow, Russia, as part of the Moscow International Film Festival. The festival is hosted annually by a different BRICS country and features films representing its member states. Florence Masebe, a South African actor and festival jury member, said, "We get to exchange and know each other better and understand each other's preciousness and values better when we get to watch each other's stories." Ethiopian producer Yirgashewa Teshome, also a festival jury member, added, "The BRICS Film Festival will make a difference for sure among the BRICS countries." In the grand scheme for African BRIC countries, action in this context could mean pooling resources, widening access to foreign markets, pushing back against American and European entanglements, and inspiring regional cooperation, which could only bode well for the continued development of their local film industries, and spur economic growth. It also could mean absolutely nothing at all! Here's video coverage of the opening day press conference via Africa News.

The recent Gouna Film Festival (GFF) and the MV Catherine arms shipment scandal have both ignited intense debates across Egypt and the Middle East, spotlighting Egypt’s current position amid regional turmoil. While GFF, held from October 24 to November 1, 2024, aimed to celebrate the arts and emphasize cinema’s humanitarian role, it has faced criticism for its timing amid escalating violence in Gaza and Lebanon. In parallel, the MV Catherine controversy involving allegations of arms transfers has raised difficult questions about Egypt’s foreign policy and potential ties with Israel. Together, these events reveal complex cultural and political dynamics at play, testing Egypt’s standing domestically and regionally. #FilmFestival #CinemaForbad #CulturalDiplomacy #MiddleEastPolitics #ArtAndPolitics #SocialImpact #DocumentaryFilmmaking #Gaza #FilmIndustry #PoliticalAwareness #FilmCommunity #CreativeLeadership #HumanRights #CinematicStorytelling #ArabSolidarity #TransparencyInGovernment #CulturalIdentity #GlobalCinema #EthicalFilmmaking #InternationalRelations

Need some positivity? A film that deals with complexity and nuance, then check out: The Wolf Within A film focussed on Italy and the interactions between human and wolf and how we can all live together. The thrust: 'Everything has a right to exist. What's the point in killing something just because you can't directly control it? Learn to co-exist, thrive together even. The benefits outweigh the compromises and there are bigger factors at play in preventing more people making a living from shepherding' So much to learn for Britain. The UK tells itself it has world leading policies on climate change but when it comes to nature, mainland Europe is so much further ahead with the allocation and management of fully functioning ecosystems. And it is playing a key role in reversing rural depopulation. #wolf #wearenature #generationrestiration https://lnkd.in/eAXKaU8Y
