On Nov. 29, Syrian rebels took control of most of the city of Aleppo in a lightning offensive.
The country’s second largest city has been controlled by the Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad’s regime since 2016.
The surprise offensive was the biggest challenge to Assad’s regime in years.
Syrian activist Omar Alshogre, who was arrested and tortured by the Assad regime for taking part in the Syrian Revolution in 2012, shares with Almost why this moment is so significant.

My name is Omar al Shogren. I was born and raised in Syria. And at the age of 15, the Syrian revolution started and I joined and I was arrested and tortured for many years by the Syrian government just for simply for asking for freedom. And when the revolution started, the regime started to bring the military to kill people on the streets. A lot of officers and soldiers rejected the orders and they defected from the military because they refused to kill their own people. And then those small group of people who defected. Built something called the Free Syria Army that started to protect the the protesters but also to fight back against the government. They managed to take control of most of the country, but then Russia and Iran was were invited by the Syrian regime to come and help in killing the Syrian people. That's what they started to to bomb from the sky every single meter off of the country and then they gained control of the majority of the country again and now what's happening is that those rebel groups they they came together and now they actually. Leading an offensive against the government to take over so many areas, considering the fact that Russia is busy in Ukraine and Iran is is not as supportive of the Syrian regime at this stage and Hezbollah as we could. And this is very significant because when an area is liberated, what happens is that people move back to their homes. Because if they live in another, another city, they are internally displaced people. And as soon as it's somewhere is liberated from the government, people move. Back immediately and they tried to build a life, even though the day after they may be bombed. This is important. We need to bring awareness about this. We need to talk about it. The world have known about Syria and what's happening in Syria, but so much things, so many wars have started after that that nobody follows. What's happening is here today. It's important because if the world doesn't know, no one in the world is coming on, is coming to to help. And the world had disappointed Syria so many times. We went out to the street peacefully with flowers in our hands. Because we believe even though the regime may face us with guns, the world, the democratic world, will come to our aid. But they failed us and hopefully they won't fail us today. And I depend mostly on the people. You. Who can bring awareness about what's happening? Take small actions to save lives.
