Mental health is important and is often overlooked by fatigue and anxiety specifically in the creative industry. Burnout is real and it’s starts by listening to yourself. Remember that progress takes time, you can only control what you can control. Breathe and remember that it’s the journey not the destination. Embrace your growth, stay positive, and be with people who share your dreams and passions.
Let's talk about it: wellbeing in the creative industry. 🌱 At Laughing Dragon Studios, we firmly believe in the importance of work/life balance, but we know this isn't always an easy mindset to adopt as an individual! ⚖️ Artists are faced with the unique challenges of a creative role-- while we are lucky to do what we love, it can come at the cost of burnout, perfectionism, and comparison. 😔 We're here to share some tips on how to stay afloat so you can reach your full potential -- both as an individual and as an artist! 💫 Let us know in the comments what you would say to a fellow artist who may be struggling. 🫂 #Artist #Animation #Entertainment

Last week, I had the good fortune to get my hands on a ticket to experience The Manikins, a show that all my friends in the immersive theatre scene had been so enthusiastic about—my curiosity was piqued. It was hard to get a ticket. They sell out within minutes of going on sale, because the word-of-mouth marketing around this show is stellar, but also because it is a show for an audience of one, who also serves as the story's protagonist. I won't give anything about the experience away, as I don't want to spoil any of it for future audience members. But I will say this: it's been a while since an immersive experience moved me in this way. Jack Aldisert, the writer of the show, has said in an interview with Immersive Rumours, that one of his influences while making the show was Mark Fisher, specifically his writing on the Weird and the Eerie. No surprise, then, that it appealed to me in the way it did (Fisher's work is an important touchstone of my research as I write the short stories I'm currently working on). I'm a real sucker for weird fic. What The Manikins does so well is to fully utilise the form and rules of immersive theatre and its potential for creating several intertwined layers of reality and fiction. Those of us who love our work in immersive theatre know that we do it because we want the audience to feel something that reality alone seldom gives us, but which is central to the experience of being human: the freedom to play, the thrill of being surprised, the satisfaction of creating something that, even if not real, is unquestionably true. And this show certainly succeeds. Tickets are steeply priced (the downside to making theatre for an audience of one), but definitely worth saving for. Tackling Theatre's Technological Challenges: How LuminaStage Productions is Paving the Way The live entertainment industry, steeped in tradition, is undergoing a significant transformation as audience expectations shift toward more immersive and interactive experiences. However, many theatres face substantial challenges, including outdated staging methods, insufficient technological integration, and declining audience engagement. These obstacles have made it increasingly difficult for theatres to keep pace with modern demands. For instance, many venues still rely on conventional staging and lighting techniques, which limit dynamic visual storytelling and hinder immersive experiences. This stagnation has contributed to decreased audience retention. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated these challenges, with major Canadian theatre companies like Prairie Theatre Exchange reporting subscription drops of up to 57%. As theatres struggle to recover, attracting tech-savvy audiences who seek more than passive viewing has become a pressing concern. Enter LuminaStage Productions Inc., a pioneer in addressing these challenges head-on. By harnessing cutting-edge technologies like motion-tracking sets and smart costume solutions, LuminaStage is redefining storytelling on stage. Their innovative, tech-enhanced environments create immersive narratives that captivate audiences in ways traditional setups cannot. Solving Key Industry Problems Enhanced Visual Storytelling: LuminaStage’s motion-tracking technology enables real-time adjustments to set elements, allowing seamless interactions between performers and their environments. This advancement dramatically enhances performance fluidity and introduces a new dimension to live storytelling. Smart Costume Solutions: By integrating LEDs and motion sensors into costumes, LuminaStage elevates performer engagement. This allows for dynamic costume changes based on movement, creating visually stunning displays that enhance the overall experience. Audience Engagement: Incorporating interactive elements and immersive visuals, LuminaStage bridges the gap between performers and audiences, inviting attendees into the narrative and fostering deeper emotional connections. As live entertainment seeks to regain its footing in the post-pandemic world, LuminaStage Productions equips theatres with the tools they need to modernize and meet today’s audience expectations. Through their technology-driven solutions, they are not merely pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in theatre—they are fundamentally redefining the medium. In the coming weeks, Soul City Arts is again pushing boundaries with the ‘Sleepers’ installation at Port Hope, Sparkbrook, Birmingham, UK. Audiences are invited to come into the immersive installation for quiet contemplation or, in some cases, to sleep overnight. It is, in a sense, an experiment in communing, in encountering and engaging in depth with those different to ourselves, but involves doing so over extended time and, in this fast-paced digital world, means tuning out the distractions of data flows, messaging and communication. The story of the sleepers in the cave can be found in in the eighteenth surah of the Holy Qur’an, the Surah Al-Khaf. That surah, in turn, can be found in the fragments of the amazing Birmingham Qur’an, held at the University of Birmingham dating back to 568-645, CE and which provided the stimulus for the project. The story tells of young travellers whose paths crossed when they retreated into a cave and who communed there together. Time passed differently for them and they emerged from the cave after centuries, although they had experienced a much shorter passage of time. Accounts vary. Fascinatingly, the story of the sleepers is one of those shared by Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and serves as a reminder how peoples of faith have, across history, not only existed in conflict, but have been drawn together and shared aspects of common narrative, heritage, belief and custom. It reminds us, too, of the need to reinvest time in the renewal our communal identity and bonds – something which is needed more than ever in these fraught times. Methodologically, ‘Sleepers’ breaks new ground. Or rather, it uses old ground differently. As well as marking a new level of immersive practice for SCA, exploring the idea of sustained, deepened relationships built over time, it also marks the latest in a series of attempts by SCA to transform our Port Hope warehouse space from being a production space into something much more. Alongside teaching programmes, food and dining events, reimagined religious festivals, film screenings, and transatlantic digital encounter events, ‘Sleepers’ sees us take another step towards making Port Hope a world-class arts engagement, performance and exhibition space – one which resonates internationally, whilst remaining at the heart of a community so in need of such resources. Come and gather. Come and connect. Feel time pass differently. Sleep. Whether for a shorter visit or an overnight stay, book now to come and spend time in the cave. 🕯 🎻 In light of the recent articles about the Candlelight Concerts....the perceived threat to orchestras...I wanted to share this article from a few years back: 📒 "Many poo-poo these experiences, criticizing the watered-down artistic impact or cheapened commercial appeal. Yet, having gone to and enjoyed one of these immersive experiences myself, I think we need to re-evaluate a few things before we continue to criticize. First, these immersive experiences open a gateway into an art form that for decades and centuries the general population hasn’t necessarily felt welcomed or had easy access to. Experiences create an interest which leads to curiosity and, if played correctly, leads to furthering that interest into a passion. Second, traditional arts organizations should acknowledge the trend and the impact of this competition. Additionally, they should allow this to invigorate them, not threaten them. It forces a re-evaluation of how a performance effects and impacts the public. The scary side of this could be that traditional organizations may not have the funds or resources to up their own game. But that shouldn’t stop them from finding creative solutions. It all boils down to how the experience of a performance feels to the ticket buyer. An organization will be on track if buyers feel: 👉 Invited 👉 Welcomed 👉 Involved and included 👉 Valued Organizations who turn their noses up at immersive experiences make me think there is either an air of snobbery or a defensive reaction. Neither perspective is about the potential patrons, but about cloistered individuals. There have been a few good examples of orchestras exploring the immersive experiences. The Curtis Institute offered an Immersive Scheherazade this year. But the best example of immersive experience given by an orchestra was the live performance by Aurora Orchestra who performed Berlioz’s Symphony Fantastic in Royal Albert Hall. I highly recommend checking this performance and noticing the details that make this production work: 🌟 Lighting and focus 🌟 Staging 🌟 Pacing and flow 🌟 Story telling 🌟 Commitment from all the performers READ MORE: #Immersive #candlelight #concert #experience #tickets #audienceengagement #value #trend #orchestra #listening #arts #family #price #activity #welcome
