China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has initiated an antitrust investigation into U.S. chipmaker Nvidia, alleging violations of the country's anti-monopoly law. The probe also examines whether Nvidia breached commitments made during its 2020 acquisition of Israeli chip designer Mellanox Technologies. This move follows recent U.S. restrictions on semiconductor exports to China, escalating tensions between the two nations. In response, China has restricted exports of critical minerals to the U.S. and urged domestic companies to reduce reliance on American chips. Nvidia, which previously held over 90% of China's AI chip market, now faces increased competition from local firms like Huawei.

#LiminalWarfare Chinese authorities said on Monday they have launched an investigation into United States-based chip giant Nvidia Corp. over suspected violations of the country's anti-monopoly law, in a move that will likely be seen as a retaliatory move against Washington's recent chip curbs. The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) said the U.S. chipmaker is also suspected of violating commitments it made during its acquisition of Mellanox Technologies Ltd, according to terms outlined in the regulator's 2020 conditional approval of that deal. It did not elaborate on how Nvidia might have violated China's anti-monopoly laws. Nvidia did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The company's shares fell 2.2% in premarket trading after the Chinese regulator's announcement.

Intel’s EU Antitrust Fine Overturned by Court Intel has seen a major EU antitrust fine, originally set at €1.06 billion (around $1.45 billion) in 2009, overturned by the European Court of Justice. The penalty stemmed from accusations of Intel using "conditional rebates" to deter PC manufacturers from using competitors' chips. The court ruled against the European Commission’s appeal of a 2022 decision, which had annulled the original fine, finding insufficient evidence of anti-competitive behavior. However, Intel is still accountable for "naked restrictions," leading to a separate $400 million fine last year for restricting competitors’ access to the market.
