The opening ceremonies of the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, captured on film, the first Olympics I can remember, with the entrance of the Olympic flame, accompanied by the greatest middle distance runners of the world including Kip Keino and Jim Ryun who competed on this track. These Games that began in such overt joy (and synthesizer music) and hope ended tragically and so the hopes of the city of Munich and of West Germany to finally put the horrors of the past in the past were dashed in violence. The murder of the Israeli athletes who came only to compete remains a tear in the fabric of sport. The Olympic Games, even with the attendant politics, commercialism, and corruption that accompany them, for me represent the purest of striving and of hope for the future. As the youth of the world assembles in Paris, a city of incomparable beauty, it is both my hope and prayer, that these Games go off without violence and honor the spirit of the athletes assembled and that even in a divided contentious world we can celebrate the human spirit. By the time they end, I do know that the athletes in victory and defeat will have honored that spirit. I am fortunate enough, after being an 8 year-old watching those Munich opening ceremonies from my Grandmother's sofa, to now work with several sport organizations from the U.S. and Canada competing in Paris and who are living the vision of a better world I saw for the first time on display in Munich. #Olympics #OlympicSpirit #Paris2024 #OlympicHistory #ValueofSport #Aspriation #BeautyofSport

India’s journey at the Paris 2024 Olympics saw a contingent of 117 athletes striving for glory. Despite the challenges, they returned with six medals—one silver and five bronze—showcasing the nation’s growing prowess on the global stage. While a gold medal remained elusive, the close calls and near-misses are a testament to the immense potential of our athletes. Notably, Vinesh Phogat’s remarkable win over Yui Susaki highlighted her skill and determination, making her a strong contender before an unfortunate turn of events. Progress in sports like women’s table tennis, where two Indian athletes reached the pre-quarterfinals for the first time, and India’s victory over Romania in the team event, is a sign of the bright future ahead. Promising performances in mixed archery by Dhiraj Bommadevara and Ankita Bhakat, as well as near victories by Lakshya Sen, Satwik, and Chirag, show that our athletes are right on the cusp of greater success. The name of the Paris 2024 mascot is Olympic Phryge, based on the traditional small Phrygian hats that the mascots are shaped after. The name and design were chosen as symbols of freedom and to represent allegorical figures of the French republic. As Paris 2024’s vision is to demonstrate that sport can change lives, the mascots will be playing a major role by leading a revolution through sport. The Olympic Phryge is decked out in blue, white and red - the colours of France’s famed tricolor flag - with the golden Paris 2024 logo emblazoned across its chest. Phrygian caps can be seen sat atop the head of the iconic figure Marianne in every town hall and even feature on everyday objects in France such as coins and stamps. They are also an international symbol of liberty worn by freed slaves in Roman times and appearing on different emblems in North and South America. Also known as the liberty cap, the Phrygian cap has become one of the symbols of the French Republic. The motto of the Olympic Phryge and Paralympic Phryge is: “Alone we go faster, but together we go further,” representing the ways in which the mascots, and the people of the world, can make each other better by working side-by-side. https://lnkd.in/gUgkVGcF

That’s one of the main conclusions of a media analysis, conducted by the Belgian national Agence de presse Belga They monitored Belgian press through print, online, radio and television from 25 July to 15 August 2024.   📊Some key findings: In Belgium, 𝟗𝟎.𝟑% of mentions related to the 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬 𝐎𝐥𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐜 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 are associated with ‘𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐠𝐢𝐮𝐦’. This represents an astonishing 𝟑𝟑% increased compared to the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. Media attention for the Olympics goes hand-in-hand with the sporting results of our Team Belgium athletes. Especially the Olympic medallists help to maintain a high visibility throughout the Games. Is the Olympic Cauldron Flying With a Hot-Air Balloon? Here's Everything We Know The iconic sign of the games will take off into the sky every night, landing again at 2 a.m., for the length of the #ParisOlympics. But it's tethered to the ground the whole time. Did they just send the Olympic cauldron up into the Paris skies in a hot-air balloon? IS the cauldron a hot-air balloon? Will it just float around there in the sky for two weeks? If you watched the Paris Olympics opening ceremony on Friday, you might have those questions and more. Long story short: The cauldron will be on the ground during the day, but at sunset each night, a balloon will raise it up into the sky, but it will remain tethered to the ground. The cauldron is 30 meters (98 feet) high with a 7-meter-diameter (22 feet) ring of fire. It will fly 60 meters (196 feet) above the ground from sunset until 2 a.m. "Fly" isn't quite right, as it'll still be tethered to the ground, but it will be up in the air. And the balloon itself isn't a traditional hot-air balloon, although it looks like one. The flame is 100% #electric. Usually, the cauldron is lit while on the ground in the main Olympic stadium, and stays grounded, its flame burning brightly, for the entire length of the Games. But the Paris ceremony was different in many ways. Athletes didn't march into a stadium, instead, they were on boats floating down the city's Seine River. So there was no major stadium where the ceremony ended and where a cauldron could be placed and lit. Instead, a number of different athletes, some French, some from other nations, including the US, passed the Olympic flame along, from athlete to athlete, until it reached the Jardin des Tuileries, near the famed Louvre Museum. Then, the Games paid homage to France's historic hot-air-balloon history. The first-ever hot-air balloon flight took place in Paris in 1783 from this spot, with a more powerful balloon doing the same days later, from the same spot. A century later, in 1878, French engineer Henri Giffard, invented the "captive balloon," made up of a gas balloon and a steam winch. "The lighting of the Cauldron is always a highlight at the Games, because it signals the start of the Games," Tony Estanguet, president of #Paris2024, said in a statement. "With a #FlyingCauldron, we wanted to pay tribute to the spirit of daring, creativity, innovation — and sometimes madness! — of France, at the heart of the DNA of Paris 2024." Road to Paris D-28: The emblems of Paris 2024 Each edition of the Olympic Games has its own official emblem. Created by the organising committee, this emblem typically features elements that represent or symbolise the Games host, in addition to specific Olympic elements such as the rings or the name and year of the relevant edition. The Games emblem is as much a vital component of their visual identity as the mascots and pictograms. The candidates for the organisation of an Olympic Games edition also often design one or several emblems over time in order to give their project an identity. Once the Games are awarded, a new emblem is usually created. In an elegant and understated style, inspired by the Art Deco movement, the Paris 2024 emblem combines three fundamental symbols: a gold medal, the Olympic flame and Marianne. The gold medal is the symbol of victory. It invites us to test our limits and reveal the athlete that lies in all of us. The flame conveys the energy of sharing. It expresses Paris 2024’s desire to organise Games for everyone. As for the female face, this is a nod to Marianne. It epitomises French Games, and recalls women’s first participation in the Olympic Games, in Paris in 1900. Often called the grandest celebration of sport around the globe, the Olympics is also a platform for 200-plus countries to showcase their soft power as well. As the athletes will be seen in action till August 11, did you know that Paris is hosting the Summer Olympics after exactly 100 years? Got intrigued with this crazy fun fact right? Here is not one… Not two… Not even three… But five interesting facts that you would not have known until now: 1). Bangladesh: I am pretty sure you all might be puzzled when you saw the country 'Bangladesh' on this list, but unfortunately, they have an unwanted record to their name. They are the most populous country in the world without an Olympic medal. With more than 60 countries never having tasted Olympic glory, will Bangladesh exit the medal-less club in Paris? 2). 1960: The year not only marked the beginning of a new decade, but it was also the first time when the Summer Olympics held in Rome were televised internationally. 3). Symbol of unity: The design of the Olympic flag was nothing short of genius as it brilliantly showcases unity and inclusivity. There are six colours in the flag namely - Blue, Yellow, Black, Green, Red and White. The interesting part is at least one colour from the Olympic flag is visible on every national flag in the world. 4). 1972: The first thing that will strike your mind will be the terrorist attack during the Munich Olympics when a Palestinian group Black September killed 11 Israeli athletes. But the Munich Olympics was an event where an official mascot debuted (Waldi the Dachshund). 5). Gold isn't Gold: Yes! You heard that right. The Gold medal winners wear silverware with Gold plating.
