This week, we witnessed the endorsement of the #PactForTheFuture — a landmark declaration that signals a pivotal moment in our global response to climate change, the Director said. Today’s event is more than just a conversation; it is an opportunity to shape the path forward. Insights from the Daring Cities 2024 Bonn Dialogues The climate talks (SB60), which took place in Bonn over the last two weeks, built on the results of COP28 in Dubai and prepared important decisions for COP29 in Baku in November 2024. In parallel, the "Daring Cities 2024 Bonn Dialogues" took place from 3 to 5 June, placing cities and regions at the centre of the global climate debate. This event included important milestones such as a round table and the first joint public dialogue between high-ranking UN climate leaders. The dialogues fostered synergies between different topics such as climate-land-nature, damage and urban systems. The Daring Cities 2024 Bonn Dialogues provided a platform for national partners, local and subnational leaders and UNFCCC negotiators to advance climate efforts towards COP29 in Baku and COP30 in Belém. Through Locally and Regionally Determined Contributions, they leverage data, partnerships, and engagement to drive decarbonization and resilience, bridging global ambitions with local action. Representing EU Committee of the Regions and sharing examples from my city Turku, I emphasized that national governments must integrate local expertise into NDCs to shape effective climate strategies. Subnational leadership can exceed national targets. 🌍 International Climate Coalition Calls for Climate Justice at COP29 This week, the Dutch International Climate Coalition (IKC), of which Cordaid is a proud member, presented its key recommendations to the Dutch government ahead of COP29 in Baku, taking place from November 11 to 29. In our joint position paper, we emphasise the urgent need for equitable climate solutions that prioritise climate justice, especially as vulnerable communities continue to bear the brunt of the global climate crisis. Allied for Climate Transformation By 2025 (ACT2025) released a Call to Action - "Climate-Vulnerable Countries’ Expectations Leading to COP29". Allied for Climate Transformation by 2025 (ACT2025) is a consortium of think tanks and experts elevating the needs and priorities of vulnerable developing countries to deliver ambitious, balanced, just, and equitable outcomes at the UN climate negotiations and other multilateral fora to chart a path toward greater global solidarity. In an urgent call to action for #justice and #survival, the ACT2025 consortium lays out expectations for what must be achieved in the lead up to and at #COP29 to meet the needs of #climate #vulnerable #developing #countries.
