Ethics are taking center stage in most professional marketing discussions. To many of us in business, when ethics come up, thoughts run straight to accounting fraud, supplier mismanagement, and probably inappropriate behavior toward staff. This is not wrong. In today’s insight, we will get a fresh perspective that will anchor our ethics appreciation this year. In 2013, while at a class reunion at Duke University, the now Apple CEO Tim Cook stated, “when I think of ethics, I think of leaving things better than you found them" and to me that goes for everything from environmental issues, to how you work with suppliers, the environmental effects of your products, to the things you choose to support as a business, to the way you treat your employees. Your whole persona as a business fits under the umbrella of ethics. This for me was the most powerful yet simple understanding of ethics that I’ve come across. Imagine if as marketers, we take center stage - with a goal to simply leave things better than we found them, to value the organizational reputations we are entrusted with, to improve the product and service offerings we manage, to improve the business relations with its key stakeholders and customers, think of all aspects that we find intact when we join organizations. Then unethical behavior becomes simple as well, leaving things worse than you found them in all aspects. What’s your thought on this angle toward ethics?
