I once was uninvited to my own event. I am sure no one is shocked, but even at 19, I was the event planner of my friend group. Obsessively creating opportunities for us all to go places in pack of 20+. (I now know I was community building even then.) But to many, I was that annoying girl who let everyone know where we were camping for the year. 🤦♀️ dealt with bookings 🤦♀️ organized boats 🤦♀️ handled food for 20+ PEOPLE for 3 days And so one year, a friend decided to organize a second trip that summer - but not invite me. Man that sucked. I had alot of people in response go “well you are ALOT with your messages, reminders, organizing.” A few of my “friends” basically pointed to me and said “this is too much.” And for them, it was. Sometimes when we put our hearts, our souls, our abilities out there people will look at it and go “not for me.” And what a blessing that is they are giving you. That moment allowed me to healthily shed some really toxic relationships from my teens I was clinging to. And to narrow in on the people who looked at my hyper focused community building/connecting events heart and go “yep, she’s my people.” What is your “too much” that helps you weed out people who arent for you?? Did you know???? I conquered my first 24 Peaks Challenge…I did not do it alone.. thanks to all the hiking enthusiasts 🥾 challenge embracers ⛰️ dare I say it.. dare devils, 🧗♀️ fundraising titans 💸 health and safety experts, 🦺⛑️ events planners 🎤 and volunteers and trustees 🧭🗺️ Let it be known, this ultimate Lake District challenge is not for the faint hearted and I mean for everyone involved. It’s is TOUGH! Yet sooooooooo very rewarding! And all for Seafarers. I have never sailed. Though something tells me it is akin to the challenges our seafarers embrace daily. They dig deep. Embrace all weathers. Ride their waves with grit and grace. Encounter dark moments. And then the moment of triumph. The europhia. The relief. The excitement. The pride. The sense of accomplishment. Yet not alone. But with others. That’s the rollercoaster of emotions, I witnessed whilst hosting the 130+ hikers early July for the annual The Seafarers’ Charity challenge fundraising event. From my first rodeo, I came away with the following: TEAMWORK 👏🏾: All the participants of the #24PeaksChallenge had to work together. This was an essential component to the success of the individual teams, the challenge and the event. It is a great team building opportunity for any corporate; you get to practice strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, management of varying skills/performance, patience, communication and decision making skills in a highly pressured environment. VULNERABILITY 🫶🏾: There was no room for egos. Everyone was pushed to their limits - hikers, safety experts, experienced walkers and me. It was beautiful to see grown men and women recognise their limits and acknowledge they had peaked and gracefully retire, knowing they gave it their best and could return next year, if they wanted. PREPARATION 📋: Hiking 24 Peaks in 48 hours is not a walk in park. When I introduced safety briefings, it was to manage expectations; I was keen to emphasise the importance of preparing for the mental and physical challenge the maritime professionals had signed up for. Meeting first time walkers at the finish line, the consensus was they could have prepared more and there was room for improvement by potentially opting for the Bronze 🥉or Silver 🥈challenges, which were introduced this year. COLLABORATION 🖇️: Listen, I had a quiet tearful moment on the Saturday morning at Ambleside when the reality hit. All these men and women had given up their weekends, time away from their families for the betterment of seafarers. It was profound, though I am a tad emotional when it matters. I was blown away, still am, at the generosity of friends, family members, industry colleagues, corporates encouraged to give to help improve lives of seafarers and their families. It was joy personified for me. It was the good work I had craved to do. So thank you, my purpose is manifesting!
