“Surrounding yourself with the best people for the best advice is the most important thing 🔍👥 [for creating startups].” At our Under30s and Under35s Awards dinner on 6th February 2024, we had the pleasure of interviewing and talking with Marine Tanguy. Marine was one of Hurun's UK Under35 awards winners for 2023 for founding MTArt Agency. Set up in 2015, MTArt Agency is a global talent management agency representing the world’s leading contemporary visual artists 🎨. It manages some of the world's leading artists. Turnover more than doubled to about £19m in 2022. She was 25 when she created her company and took a large amount of risks that now, looking back, she is extremely grateful for. There’s a drive, ambition, and naivety that you have at a younger age, which allows you to take more and larger risks. You have to ensure you surround yourself with the best people and seek the top advice when you’re starting out, but you also have to be prepared to make a lot of mistakes, and there is nothing you can do to avoid that. There was some serious myth-busting happening yesterday on the 'Innovation for a Better Tomorrow' panel at Inspiring Stories's Festival for the Future. Chris Simcock, Mrinali Kumar, Melissa Gollan (Te Rarawa) and I got stuck into exploring the startup and innovation sector here in Aotearoa. We talked about the pros and cons of the startup landscape here, compared to the rest of the world, and some of the recommendations we would make to anyone thinking about starting or scaling up. We also dissected some of the myths we think are holding some people back from leaning into these spaces. Like, that 'for good' businesses can't be profitable. Or that you need to be an expert in something to tackle that industry. Or, that young people can't build good businesses. And we talked about some the discrimination and inclusivity challenges facing some innovators. All in all, it was an awesome 90 minutes that absolutely flew by. Thank you so much to Inspiring Stories, organising events can be such a nightmare, but what you created was magic. And thank you to my amazing panelists Chris Simcock, Mrinali Kumar, and Melissa Gollan (Te Rarawa). Your insight and experience was inspiring.
