👋 Get to know Südzucker Group, Germany - a member of the Renewable Carbon Initiative since July 2022. This month, RCI interviewed Dr. Jens Angermann (New Business Development, Head of Biobased Chemicals) of the Südzucker Group, Germany, an internationally operating corporate group. The group has five segments: Sugar, Specialities, CropEnergies, Starch and Fruit. Südzucker's position in the discussion of using food crops as industrial feedstock emphasises the versatile use of agricultural raw materials beyond food. The focus should be on maximising the efficiency of land use rather than restricting applications to food. The argument suggests that there is sufficient land available to replace a significant proportion of fossil carbon with #biomass without compromising food security. However, Südzucker also recognises the importance of prioritising food requirements in times of scarcity (see RCI's position here: https://lnkd.in/eucCcx4f). 𝗨𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦ü𝗱𝘇𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗖𝗢𝟮 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 In the interview, Südzucker also explains that the company is actively exploring the use of its own biogenic CO2 resources from ethanol fermentation for various applications. The company currently uses around 500,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 per year to replace fossil carbon, primarily in the food and beverage sector. This biogenic CO2 is considered to be a #renewable and #sustainable carbon source of high purity, suitable for fermentation and chemical processes. Research and development efforts are underway to produce green methanol and green hydrogen from biogenic CO2 and to explore biotechnological pathways for the production of organic acids. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗖𝗜 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗦ü𝗱𝘇𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽? „Südzucker owns deep and comprehensive experience and know-how in the agricultural sector, in process technologies of very different kind as well as in R&D in the food and non-food sector and by this can contribute with expertise in working groups or other activities. Solid arguments and positions regarding the urgently needed transformation process can be provided hereto and thus support the achievement of the overarching goal." Südzucker supports the switch from #fossilfeedstock to #RenewableCarbon. 🧫 Advancing bio-based innovations in the food industry Last week, EFFCA’s Regulatory Affairs Manager Chiara Naddeo participated in DG GROW’s Workshop on ‘Advancing bio-based innovations in the food industry: Focus on Fermentation’, taking place in Brussels. The discussions focused on industrial applications of #fermentation technologies, with particular emphasis on SMEs employing biomass, precision, and gas fermentation. EFFCA welcomed the European Commission’s initiatives with regards to future opportunities for fermentation-derived foods, such as the EU Biotech Act, aiming to boost biotechnology and biomanufacturing in the EU, where #foodcultures play a crucial role. Currently, the regulatory landscape creates hurdles that hold in innovation and delay access to advanced microbial solutions, such as bioprotective cultures that improve food safety and reduce food waste.
