Labor Day, officially the first Monday in September in the US since 1894, was originally born out of the labor movement’s struggle to obtain better working conditions for workers. While most of us celebrate Labor Day today as the unofficial end of summer, with parades, picnics, and pool parties, it is also a great time to reflect on our own work lives. How might your work life improve so that it better fits you? What would need to change for this to happen? Is there a small step you can take right now (ok, maybe tomorrow if you are actually enjoying the holiday today!) to get started? You don’t have to be unhappy with your work life and if you are actually pretty satisfied, it doesn’t make you selfish to want it to be even better. Happy and healthy physicians are better physicians for their patients, better colleagues, and better leaders as well as better parents, friends, and members of the community. You can the make the changes necessary to make your work life better. If you are feeling too overwhelmed or just don’t know where to start, coaching can help. For years, I thought Labor Day was just an extra 24 hours to finally tackle those pesky to-dos that had been glaring at me all week, month or year. Spoiler alert: That approach doesn't work. 😅 Now, I’ve learned that Labor Day is about something revolutionary—taking a break! It’s a chance to actually relax, recharge, and maybe even let the laundry pile grow a little higher. Imagine that—giving ourselves permission to pause and just be. This post picks up from my previous post where I shared a video featuring Bernie Sanders at a Senate hearing and included my own arguments from a mental health perspective and trauma informed lens that make the business case of why we need a four day work week. In my previous post I talked about workplace trauma and increased levels of depression, anxiety, and work-related stress and how the pandemic and the current business model and status quo exacerbate these issues. This video highlights how the highest rating countries in terms of happiness alleviate a lot of the aforementioned problems through universal health care, tuition free college, labor unions with worker protections and collective bargaining among its workforce, and the fact that workers have more of a work/life balance with paid time off and that includes paid sick time, paid vacation time, and paid maternity leave.
