Navigating rocky terrain can be challenging, as we experienced last summer in Grand Teton National Park. Here are some essential route-finding tips to help you stay on track and safe:
1. Study the Map: Familiarize yourself with the trail and key landmarks before you start.
2. Look for Cairns: These rock piles often mark the route. Follow them, but don’t create new ones.
3. Use Your Compass: In areas where the trail is unclear, a compass can keep you heading in the right direction.
4. Stay on Durable Surfaces: Avoid trampling vegetation by sticking to rocks and established trails.
5. Backtrack If Needed: If you think you’re off course, it’s better to retrace your steps and find the correct path.
Stay safe and enjoy the adventure!
