There is a British saying; “you can’t bullshit a bullshitter.” But the the thing that I have learnt with 30 years in the apparel industry is that statement is absolutely false. You can bullshit a bullshitter, but you can’t bullshit an expert. This is something that has become more apparent to me as I am sold multiple different tech solutions to fashion’s challenges around EPR, DPP, EUDR, EDR and all the other acronyms. The people bringing solutions that actually work either come from the industry, or have embedded themselves in the industry, before selling it to anyone. Take Pattern Project for example. Before they even took their production AI program to the industry they set up their own factory to test it. Their test factory has been essential in creating a product that excels against all others. If you want to look at sourcing transparency then The Sourcery has the best solution. They understand where power and money accumulate in the supply chain and have a platform that decentralises that. Giving more power to those who grow cotton. That wouldn’t have come from a Silicon Valley tech bro. (There are always exceptions to the rule though and Gemell is one of them. But they were solving a different problem, which is how to get clothing to look more realistic in games. It just so happened that the biproduct is something really relevant to textile manufacturing.) There are some other digital solutions I’m testing at the moment. Sometimes I wonder why people ask me, but then I realise it’s because I am; 1) a technical idiot, if on/off doesn’t fix it I’m out, and 2) I know apparel manufacturing really well. That means the solutions I love are easy to use and solve an actual problem! But for every one I love, there are at least 20 I just don’t see the point in. And that is why you can’t bullshit an expert. #innovation #manufacturing #digitalsolution
