We understand there might be concern among our community following the news of a study which has highlighted a link between progestogens used in contraception and hormone replacement therapy, and meningioma brain tumours in women. Reassuringly, the study revealed no association between meningioma and the most commonly prescribed progestogens in the UK, including IUD devices such as the Mirena coil, HRT, and birth control pills. Levonorgestrel IUD’s (aka ‘hormonal coils’) What are they❓ Small t-shaped devices fitted inside the uterus (womb) that contain a progestogen, Levonorgestrel What do they do❓ There are a variety of devices with different amounts of hormone: 👉 Jaydess and Kyleena provide contraception and can help with bleeding for up to 3 (Jaydess) and 5 (Kyleena) years 👉 Levosert, Mirena and Benilexa can all be used to control heavy bleeding and the progestogen component of HRT for up to 5 years, they also provide effective contraception for up to 6 years (or 10 years if fitted after the age of 45) How easy are they to have fitted❓ 👉 The fitting procedure takes 10-15 minutes, the specialist uses a speculum to visualise the neck of your womb, your cervix (similar to cervical screening tests) and then inserts the device into the womb. 👉 You can experience some cramping/sharp pain during and after the procedure but we routinely offer some local anaesthetic to make the procedure more comfortable. 👉 Taking some pain relief before your appointment is also advised. What should I expect after the procedure❓ 👉 It’s quite normal to have some discomfort/pain after the procedure but this usually settles within 24-48 hours, some spotting/bleeding is also very usual. 👉 Many women use these devices to improve heavy menstrual bleeding, it can take up to 6 months for bleeding to significantly reduce or stop altogether so try and be patient, irregular bleeding is common initially. How do I find out more❓ To learn more about the devices, risks, benefits and fitting visit: https://buff.ly/3VfTk3D

The first hour after birth also called THE GOLDEN HOUR. It is called so because it is very vital as it protects the newborn from acquiring infection and reduces newborn mortality. It facilitates emotional bonding of the mother and the baby and has a positive impact on the duration of exclusive breastfeeding. To the mother, it prevents postpartum hemorrhage (excessive bleeding after birth)(PPH), promotes uterine involution, and results in lactation amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), which is a useful form of contraception. #worldbreastfeedingweek #maternalhealth #neonatalcare #healthybabies #healthymothers #sdg3 #hkpinitiative
