Two years after COVID we are seeing an increase in exclusionary discipline but not an increase in services for students or training and support for teachers. Public schools need to make a serious investment in improving school climate. Harsh discipline hurts all students, but students of color and those with disabilities are being harmed far more than others. Some schools are finding more effective alternatives, others are treading water, but unfortunately, many are falling back on well-entrenched but seriously misguided and counter-productive exclusionary practices. In the wake of COVID, we need to prioritize funding to train teachers and to add special educators and other behavioral support staff.
CDC: 'School discipline is an urgent public health problem.' On our NCYL blog, Media Relations Manager Willis Jacobson examines recent reports that further illustrate the deep harms of exclusionary discipline: https://lnkd.in/ggkN63FM

On this #WorldAIDSDay, may our sense of collective urgency never diminish to end #AIDS. While we live in a time where we have the greatest bio-medical options and advancements, systemic inequalities continue to fuel the epidemic. We have the tools to bring new HIV-infections to a halt yet, year after year, we continue to miss the mark. We must keep: 👉🏾People at the center - ALL people not just some. 👉🏾Systems change as the approach that disrupts power imbalances and rights violations 👉🏾Directly resourcing the communities most impacted as the experts leading the way. #EndAIDS #EndSTIGMA #CommunityPhilanthropy #EquitablePhilanthropy #ShiftThePower #worldAIDSDay2024 #WAD2024

The COVID-19 Response Inquiry Report was released yesterday. It highlights the erosion of trust and public confidence during the pandemic because of a ‘lack of transparency, fairness, compassion and proportionality’ in aspects of the pandemic response. To begin rebuilding trust we need to put human rights and freedoms at the heart of responses to all future emergencies. https://lnkd.in/gbx7_uVF
