Small Places, Large Issues April 22, 2024 Places may be small in scale, but their issues have a larger impact and greater potential for academic discourse. Influenced by the title ‘Small Places of Large Issues’ of Eriksen’s (2001) text, this workshop aims to initiate a scholarly dialogue between identity politics and contested spaces in Sri Lanka. We invite paper contributions from various conceptual and empirical perspectives exploring the following question/s. • What are contested spaces? • How does identity politics shape contested spaces? • How do archaeology and heritage conservation negotiate contested spaces? • How are spaces made, destroyed, and remade through identity politics? Send your abstracts (max. 400 words and five (05) keywords) to smallplaceslargeissues24@gmail.com on or before March 24, 2024.

#SecretsEgyptology Mohamed Hasan The secret of the relationship between the baboon and the lake of fire in the Book of the Dead Finally, I found a scientific and logical explanation for the connection between the baboon and guarding the lake of fire in the underworld, and the reason behind the ancient Egyptian choosing the baboon over other sacred animals, to the extent that the ancient Egyptian said about the baboon (the one who ignites fire and extinguishes it). The answer to this question has been found, according to the latest study by Herzog, which was published in the journal Evolution. For the study, the anthropologist tracked the behavior of monkeys in South Africa before, during and after the fires. I hope you will allow me to keep the answer - and let you observe and find the explanation for yourselves after watching the video and reading the study from this link. https://lnkd.in/dBDi4E5T In fact, the ancient Egyptian was distinguished from the rest of the nations of the world by his power of observation and contemplation. Just a path opener for those who want to complete this path. #egyptology #research #ancientegypt #histoire #history #architect #egypt #temples

‘𝐖𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭’ is recently published by Routledge as part of the journal #TheHistoricEnvironmentPolicyandPractice, edited by Michael Dawson. I'm sharing here on behalf of the wider editorial board of the journal, of which I am one of over a dozen members internationally. I'm pleased to share the news of, but saddened by the need for such a book: ‘𝐖𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭’ is a collection of papers written in response to the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It draws on ethnographic data, frontline recording and analysis of the malign and long-term effects of war. Themes range from the manipulation of history to the exploitation of nationalist narratives, from the demolition of Soviet era monuments to the looting of sites in the Donbass. This is challenging but essential reading. Contributors highlight the dishonesty of Russian attempts to establish a just war in Ukraine, describe the forensic analysis of mass graves and how archaeology provides critical evidence in the prosecution of war crimes. Whether you buy the book, borrow a copy or read it in a library, it is a critical contribution to understanding the effect of tyranny, the opportunism of war and exploitation of the historic environment in a time of conflict.

📜 As an archaeologist specialising in the analysis of monetary systems of the middle and early modern periods, I explore how monetary policies reflect and influence the historical epochs in which they were conceived. 📜 😊 Recently, colleagues have called upon my expertise to contribute to the identification and analysis of late antique coinage, an area that extends beyond my primary focus but has significantly enhanced my overall understanding of numismatics. This challenge I embrace as an opportunity to expand my scholarly horizons and engage more deeply with the complexity of historical currencies. 😊 As I actively work on developing the concept for a new exhibition, this initiative is not just a reflection of my passion for history and numismatics, but also of my ongoing commitment to the academic community. 🏛 In this spirit, I am open to collaboration and dialogue with colleagues and institutions sharing similar interests, looking forward to the possibilities our shared passions may unveil. #archaeology #numismatics #croatia #economy

🔍 Was Fatima Al-Fihriya the real founder of the world's oldest university? Or could it be that history has overlooked someone else? Dear Network, I’m pleased to share with you my latest research article, "Al-Qarawiyin Mosque and the Problematic of Its Founding: Between Dawud Ibn Idris and Fatima Al-Fihriya – An Analytical Approach in Light of Historical Narratives and Archaeological Data." This research revisits the origins of the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque in Fez, questioning the longstanding narrative that credits Fatima al-Fihriya as its sole founder. Through historical texts and archaeological evidence—most notably a wooden plaque from the 1960s restoration, which directly attributes the mosque’s founding to Prince Dawud Ibn Idris II—the article provides new insights into this significant historical debate. This work highlights the value of evidence-based historical research in refining our understanding of the past, calling for a careful reevaluation of inherited narratives. #Research #HistoricalResearch #history #Archaeology #IslamicHistory #CulturalHeritage #AcademicResearch #morocco #HeritageStudies #northafrica #mena #middleeast #culture #maroc #humanities

Can #archaeologists help solve the 'Wicked Problems' that the world faces, such as climate change, conflict resolution, and social injustice? This new book by Professor John Schofield suggests that they can, but that it requires them to think about archaeology in an entirely new way.
