When I look at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s breadth of priorities, gender equality continues to stand out as a key lens through which we can improve our work. The latest Equal Measures 2030 Index published today is a strong reminder of this. Almost three-quarters of the SDGs rely on progress on gender equality. Put simply: while gender equality is a goal in itself, it is also the pathway to progress in many other critical areas of development, from promoting sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth to building effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels.  Through collective action and by implementing systemic change to build a gender equal world we can create a future where every person has the opportunity to live a healthy, productive life. https://lnkd.in/d3UP8Z45 I find it deeply frustrating and disheartening that in 2024, progress on gender equality is not only stalling but actively regressing for over 1 billion women and girls. Despite global commitments, the stark reality is that many continue to face life-altering restrictions like forced marriages and being denied education or the right to speak. It's alarming that no country is on track to meet the UN's 2030 goals, and if this trend continues, we may not see gender equality until the next century!!!!! We urgently need more action and accountability, not just promises.

The SDG index, which benchmarks gender equality across 139 countries, gave 45 countries – including large parts of west, central and sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and countries in Asia including Bangladesh and Myanmar – its worst rating of “very poor”. The “dismal scenario” means global gender inequality could be worse in 2030 than when the goals were set in 2015, as armed conflict, accelerating climate breakdown, anti-gender campaigns and threats to democracy stall or reverse progress. If current trends continue, equality will not be achieved until the 22nd century.

“Women’s participation – bringing women into decision-making positions both in national governments and internationally in organisations like the UN – is key,” she said. “This is the best way to ensure that we bring about the real changes needed to achieve gender equality, rather than just talking about it.” #sdg5

Gender Equality Failures 📉 🔙A report published two weeks ago found how gender equality is stalling or going backwards for nearly 1 billion women and girls. ✍️The SDG Gender Index, published by Equal Measures 2030 found how more than 850 million girls are living in countries rated as ‘very poor’ for gender equality. Regions that hold these countries include sub- Saharan Africa, the Middle East and even parts of Asia. 🚧The rating comprises many restrictions and abuses that women and girls face such as forced pregnancies, childhood marriage and secondary education bans. 🇨🇭 Additionally, 1.5 billion women and girls lived in countries rated ‘poor’, while only Switzerland was rated as being ‘very good’. 👍The UK, US, Australia and Canada along with most of Western Europe and the Nordic countries were rated as ‘good’ ⛔Unfortunately, the report found how no country, so far, has achieved the goal of gender equality visualised by the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. More than 1 billion women and girls live in countries where gender equality is either stalling or regressing. Very poor. "No country has, so far, achieved the promise of gender equality envisioned by the UN’s 2030 sustainable development goals (SDGs). In addition to the 857 million women and girls living in countries rated “very poor”, 1.5 billion lived in countries rated “poor”.
