There is no knitting police. Nowhere to be found. Trust me! What does it mean? 𝐺𝑙𝑎𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑠𝑘! It means there is no right or wrong way of knitting, only 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 way! When you learn the basics, you will gain ease, fluidity, and pace as you practice. 📈 Stitch after stitch, you will adjust the position to the most comfortable for 𝗬𝗢𝗨. I teach a knitting class with kids. It is fascinating - for many reasons. One that stands out though, is how they quickly make it their own. Initially, I was guiding them precisely on the position of their hands and fingers. 💡Only to realize that what works for me might not be the best for them. I stepped out a little, only making recommendations and suggestions: "Try to hold the needles a little closer to the tips, see if it helps" "Try to make the stitch a little less tight, so it will work better on the other side" As a result, they have found their way through the stitches: 🔑 One uses her left index finger to hold the stitches on the left needle. 🔑 One uses her right thumb to hold those on the right needle. 🔑 One wraps the yarn with her left hand. There are no two identical knitters 💎 It makes 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗸𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 and every 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱-𝗸𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲. 💎 Nobody will ever give you a ticket, or judge your work for your methods. I don't have time to knit. The worst excuse ever not to knit. 🏅 When we say we don't have time, it's only that we don't make it a priority. I get it. Really! YOU DO YOU. You're missing out, but I respect your choice 😆 For most of my life, knitting was not only not a priority; it was not even on my radar. Now, it is true that knitting requires patience, and it does take time. Which, as we know, is all relative, and every project takes a different amount of time. So, how do you start? 🎬 𝐺𝑙𝑎𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑠𝑘! I'm hooked on circular needles. 🪝 And I'm not alone! At our Sip'N'Knit last week at Winemak'her Bar, every participant at Knit Along* used circular needles. For most people, the classic picture of knitting is the following scene: 🎞 A grandmother 👵, in a cozy armchair, near the fireplace 🔥. Probably a cat 🐈 sleeping by her feet, close to the balls of yarn 🧶. She holds two long straight sticks, and her fingers dance around the stitches at the rhythm of the metallic "clicks". 𝐴𝑚 𝐼 𝑟𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡? There are many myths to debunk here, but I'll start with the tools! What are 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀? 𝐺𝑙𝑎𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑠𝑘! They are made with tapered needle tips, relatively short, connected by a flexible cable of various lengths. There are 3 main benefits of circular needles: 1️⃣ 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲: They are appropriate for both knitting in the round and flat knitting techniques. In fact, you benefit from the cable length to hold your stitches for large projects like blankets. 2️⃣ 𝗔𝗻𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: It is easier to manage your project to your personal space with smaller needle tips. You can easily knit in quite contained places like in the subway, the bus, on a plane... My friend Stephen Paquette is now taking his knitting on hikes! 3️⃣ 𝗔𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲: Take your project out even for a short time. Knit a few stitches, and push all the stitches on the cable when it's time to put it away (hello waiting rooms without scrolling on your phone). You can safely tuck your project away, the stitches will sit patiently on the cable until you return to them.  💬❓Knitters here, what kind of needles do you prefer? MEET THE MAKER Seeing as I’ve introduced my new branding and new look Needles & Fred, it’s time for me to introduce myself! I’m the Fred part of Needles & Fred. My husband named my small business for me, so all credit goes to him, my silent partner and yarn unwinder! So, who am I? What I am is passionate about crochet, I discovered this craft in 2017, after struggling with knitting. It seemed that working with one crochet hook, was easier than working with two knitting needles. My dad taught me to knit when I was about seven, but I never really ventured past making scarves. I picked up knitting needles again when I was in my late thirties, after my mum bought me and my sisters a scarf knitting kit for Christmas one year. I made a very wonky scarf, but I loved making it and found the whole process very therapeutic. However, once again, I didn't really stray outside making scarves or square and rectangular shapes that could be sewn together as garments. My mum suggested I tried crochet instead. She set me up with a 4mm crochet hook, some yarn and an old 'how to crochet' book that she'd found on her bookshelf. I struggled to start with because all the illustrations were right-handed and I'm left-handed. I found it difficult to convert the images to left-handed, so I finally Googled 'left-handed crochet' and found the most amazing, easy to follow tutorials from Bella Coco Crochet and I was literally hooked. I started off with 'all the gear, no idea' but I started to study the art of crochet properly, learning the basics from foundation chains, increasing, decreasing, gauge and so on. I followed as many online tutorials as I could and bought books to study and try new techniques. I also took a diploma course in crochet! I now want to turn this passion into my day job, making beautiful unique pieces for people to buy and enjoy themselves, and writing crochet patterns for other crocheters to enjoy. It’s a real process, but I am really enjoying it so far. I have a wonderful team of pattern testers behind me, guiding me all the way and helping me to improve my writing and crochet techniques. I am always crocheting for someone else, so sometimes I have to stop and remind myself to make something for me. So far, I've made a lovely Mandala cardigan to wear and am currently making a poncho that might be finished by the time I'm sixty! If you are a woman in construction wanting to be taken seriously, should you be posting about knitting on LinkedIn? You can guess what my answer to that one is 😂 Believe it or not knitting doesn't make me any less of a construction person! In fact, part of my fascination with knitting is garment design and construction - bringing various materials and methods together to create different kinds of outcomes. It's not the same as building ofc.... but I would argue there are similiarties. Six years ago I was reluctant to explore this isde of myself - my creativity, love of colour and handmaking things - let alone show it off. Now I know that none of this takes away an ounce of my construction commercial knowledge, how much construction and it's people are in my heart, or how fiercely I can fight for the right thing. There are so many sides to all of us and the more we share the more intersting life is!
