Bending the Double Diamond - Some thoughts about the design process During a recent company visit, one student asked whether the company truly engages with customers the way they claim. She explained that in the university, they are trained to follow the Double Diamond design process that promotes different kind of workflow. This left me thinking. There we were at the company that was doing well and had their ways to co-create with customers, yet the students felt the company got it wrong as they did not follow the process. In my previous job I was the owner of the Human-Centered Design (HCD) process. Our process was indeed based on known frameworks such as Double Diamond. But it was not 1:1 to any of those, as it aimed to be true to our ways of work. Even then, it was not intended to be followed blindly - rather it was the framework for the people to twist and bend to their needs. Of course the level of improvisation should depend on the designer’s experience. I made a brief summary from my experience - what the process is and what it is not Design process is ✔ Collaborative: Defining the process is a great exercise, especially when co-created within the team ✔ Communication tool:  It helps in stakeholder communication. Eg. when there is a need to explain that some “understanding” needs to happen before jumping into “designing” ✔ Guide for newcomers: It helps onboard new team members and consultants by giving them a sense of the main steps, terminology, and intermediate & final deliverables. It helps also in job rotation inside the team ✔ Project management tool: It is useful for planning, work estimation, and it serves as a high-level checklist throughout the project Design process is NOT ❌ Rigid rulebook: It is not something to follow blindly. Every project is different, and the process should be merely a framework for improvisation ❌ Timeless: Processes age quickly and need to be regularly reviewed based on the feedback from the process users ❌ Guarantee of success: Sometimes people say “At least we followed the process…” If the project failed, it failed - trying to sugarcoat it does not help. Even worse if the project went south due to blindly following that process ❌ Good negotiation tactic: Saying, “We need to do this because the process says so” might work occasionally, but it can also backfire. Rather I would try to explain the way of work and benefit for the stakeholder in their language 👉 What are your experiences of processes? Board Export Feature Remember how in childhood we used to cut out pictures from magazines and glue them onto drawing paper? Recently, I caught myself thinking that our Microboard is like that same drawing paper, but on steroids. And you know what? We've made it even cooler. Now you can export the entire board as a single image. It sounds simple, but behind this simplicity lies a powerful tool for creativity and productivity. Technically, here's how it works: we use Canvas rendering to create an image of the entire board, scaled up to 4,000 pixels. The process is optimized so that even large boards with hundreds of elements convert in just seconds. Currently, it's available only in .png format. But let's talk about how this changes the workflow: 1. Elevates presentations: Forget about boring slides. Now you can showcase the entire thought process in one image.    2. Remote work made painless: Send colleagues an image of the board, and they'll instantly grasp the context, even without access to Microboard. 3. Project documentation: One snapshot of the board tells more than 100 pages of text.    4. Creative brainstorming: Print out the board and work with it offline. Yes, sometimes old methods + new technologies = magic. When we began developing the board export tool, we didn't anticipate the challenges ahead. The goal was clear: provide users with the ability to select an area and export it as an image. However, what seemed like a simple idea quickly turned into a complex task. Firstly, we needed to create a selection interface. We opted for a movable and resizable rectangle. We added handles to resize the rectangle, allowing users to adjust its size by dragging the corners. This required monitoring mouse position and implementing corner detection algorithms. We also added decorative elements to each corner to make the interface more intuitive. While adding borders to corners on a regular website might take 5 lines of code, our algorithm required about 100 lines. The actual export process was less complex: setting the camera position to capture the desired area, rendering each element within the selected region, and converting the Canvas into an image. And now, we have a powerful and intuitively understandable board export tool ready to go. Underneath the hood, there's complex logic, but for the user, it's simple and natural.

If you’re a stakeholder gearing up to work with a designer, let me share a few tips to keep things smooth and productive: 1. Align Goals: Get all the key decision-makers on the same page about the project goals. If you can, hire a product manager to keep everyone aligned throughout the project. 2. Be Prepared: Have your requirement docs or recordings ready. They don’t have to be super detailed—but a basic outline of requirements is a good start. 3. Make Time for Feedback: Block out some time in your calendar for reviews and feedback. Your designer needs your input to hit the mark, and mind-reading isn’t part of their skill set. Without these steps, your designer may end up spending more time on project management and unnecessary revisions than on creating impactful designs. Proper preparation ensures that designers have the right information and support to deliver their best work, so they can focus on what they do best: designing.
