I’m just back from Cali, Colombia and the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (#COP16). There were encouraging announcements ($163M to the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund), important alignment on climate and biodiversity funding, growing corporate commitment to Nature, and agreement to include Local and Traditional communities and Indigenous Peoples in future biodiversity talks. Sadly, the convention closed on a depressing note without a strategy to scale up finance for nature. That means staring at a massive decline in nature with no plan to get funding to those who need it most. #Colombia #Biodiversity  https://lnkd.in/eGdbv-Kk

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework is the boldest plan to make #PeaceWithNature and a plan that can truly address the triple planetary crisis. We at UN Environment Programme are, of course, fully behind it with UN Biodiversity. Healthy biodiversity is a prerequisite for equitable and sustainable development. Great to meet Astrid Schomaker, the new Executive Secretary of UN Biodiversity, this important year for tackling the biodiversity crisis. With #COP16Colombia around the corner, we discussed the urgent need for countries to develop their national plans and measure progress toward achieving the mission of ‘halt and reverse’ #biodiversity loss by 2030 and build a #naturepositive future, one with more Nature not less. Countries need to act fast to tackle the nature crisis. But the lack of a common approach to measuring nature’s decline or recovery is stalling progress and not incentivizing the contribution of non-state actors including the private sector. That’s why the @Nature Positive Initiative is convening a consensus building process to align behind one single set of science based anbut also practical ‘state of nature’ metrics. The consultation on measuring the state of nature will go live in October. #ClimateWeekNYC #UNGA #NaturePositive #ClimateAction
