THE ROOT OF THE ISSUE Strength in numbers. During a dinner conversation, friends Butch Whitfield, a realtor at Harry Norman Realtors; Liz Lapidus, founder of Liz Lapidus Strategic Communications; and Johanna Ellis-Reisinger, former owner of Atlanta Classic Cars began discussing their favorite nonprofits and how to enhance their impact. “Our goal was to develop a shared vision to guide the region’s conservation efforts,” says Whitfield. The result was Root Local that began with polling 250 environmental groups to test their interest. “We got responses from all the six sectors we identified: food systems, air and water quality management, canopy and land management, green buildings and practices, sustainable fashion and products, and travel and transportation,” says Whitfield. Using those replies, they developed a Network Map, a Collective Impact Plan and The Pollinator Network where online community members and organizations can come together to share ideas and learn how to become better stewards of the environment. “Interested citizens can register online and choose the sector that interests them most, whether its green buildings or sustainable fashion,” Whitfield says. 🌍 Reflecting on my recent community feedback session following my NFF research workshops, I’m deeply inspired by the seeds of change already sown within the Far South of Cape Town communities. As we explore trans-species accompaniment and conservation, it’s clear that there is immense potential to shape pathways toward a thriving, sustainable future that includes all species. There’s much work ahead to understand how communities can actively co-create positive futures where both humans and nature flourish mutually, but seeing the commitment and ideas already present gives me hope. Together, these efforts embody resilience, collaboration, and a powerful drive for multi-species transformation and justice. Do you work for or know a Community Organisation? Do you/they want funding for environmental and climate-related projects? Are you/they based in Tyne & Wear and Northumberland? Then we've got something for you..... We're making up to £500,000 available to community organisations for environmental and climate-related activities across Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. The announcement follows the launch of our Vital Signs North East 2024 report on the environment that highlights how local environmental action can make a real difference powered by local #philanthropy. The report, outlines three major challenges we face:  1. climate change: the rise in global temperatures, resulting in more extreme weather events and putting pressure on critical systems such as agriculture 2. declining biodiversity: damage to ecosystems upon which we depend for food, clean air, materials and medicines 3. immediate everyday issues: air and water pollution, litter and waste management and access to green spaces The report also points to what can be funded locally to make a difference and this is what this funding is focused on. Projects that tackle issues directly in communities, as well as projects that help raise awareness and encourage action, will be considered for funding. Re-wilding programmes, recycling and repurposing projects, raising awareness in communities, and improving the energy efficiency of a building are examples of activities that would be considered. Rob Williamson, CEO of the Community Foundation, said: “While environmental issues can often feel overwhelming, we firmly believe that local action can make a difference. In addition, we are fortunate to have many very special natural assets in the North East that are worth protecting. We also know that a number of our donors are eager to fund projects that can help tackle the environmental challenges we face. That’s why we’re able to allocate up to £500,000 for such projects this year.
