🍎💰 Food security gets a major boost with funding from one of the world's food giants. Cargill has launched the NutriHarvest project, a $3M initiative aimed at enhancing food security and improving nutrition for farmers in India, Kenya, Tanzania, and Guatemala. Partnering with HarvestPlus, a global leader in biofortified foods, the project will span 36 months, delivering over 17 million nutritious meals to more than 119,000 farmers. NutriHarvest operates through three key components: 🥔 Boosting the production of climate-resilient, nutrient-rich crops like vitamin A sweet potatoes and iron beans 🎓 Enhancing local school feeding programs by incorporating biofortified crops, particularly in Kenya, Tanzania, India, and Guatemala 🐔 Strengthening poultry farming in India through the Hatching Hope initiative. This multifaceted approach is designed to improve dietary diversity, increase the availability of essential vitamins and minerals, and support sustainable agriculture practices that enhance farmer incomes and local economies. 🐟 Fascinating new study in BMJ Global Health estimates that swapping out red meat for oily fish could prevent as many as 750,000 deaths from diet-related disease in 2050 and avert up to 15m years of life lived with a disability. Currently, three-quarters of global forage fish catch – comprising species such as sardines, anchovies and mackerel – is ground into fishmeal and fish oil, which are mostly used for fish farming, a sector dominated by multinational agribusiness and feed companies.
