🌍 Transforming Semi-Arid Lands: A Blueprint for Food Security 🌾 In the heart of Kajiado County, Kenya, lies Kimana—a semi-arid landscape home to the Maasai community. Here, land degradation, overgrazing, and drought threaten food security and livelihoods, forcing communities to navigate the delicate balance between tradition and innovation. At Ambokili Farm, we’re implementing sustainable solutions that not only restore degraded lands but also empower communities to thrive: ✅ Agroforestry & Silvopasture: Enhancing soil health while preserving the Maasai's cultural ties to livestock. ✅ Drought-Resistant Crops: Shifting to resilient crops like millet and sorghum to adapt to arid conditions. ✅ Water Conservation Techniques: Rainwater harvesting and sand dams mitigate water scarcity during dry seasons. ✅ Rotational Grazing: Revitalizing pastures by integrating modern practices with traditional herding techniques. Why it Matters: With 45% of the Earth’s surface classified as drylands, scaling these practices to other ASALs could be the key to global food security. Our work goes beyond restoring land—it fosters collaboration, preserves cultural heritage, and equips communities with tools for a sustainable future. 🎯 Dive into the full story and see how we’re building resilience in the face of climate challenges. Back in 2014, during my first visit to the dryland areas of Somalia, I was surprised to learn that locals didn't grow their own crops, relying instead on imports like onions from Yemen. Fast forward to today, and it's inspiring to see many small-scale farmers in the region cultivating a variety of crops despite the harsh weather conditions. This experience has been a humbling reminder that many of our assumptions can be challenged. For instance, the success of growing diverse crops in a dryland landscape with soil that still needs significant improvement, along with the integration of cover crops, has been remarkable. Unfortunately, the use of chemicals to combat pests is still prevalent, as many farmers are yet to discover alternative methods of organic farming. I'm hopeful that our site will become a place where they can learn about regenerative agriculture techniques. These methods focus on maintaining healthy, nutrient-rich soils, minimizing waste, conserving water, and protecting wildlife habitats. #somalia #agriculture #sustainablefarming #regenerativeagriculture #organicfarming #climateresilience #foodsecurity

Hivos and the VCA partners (WWF & SDI) recently visited Waya village in Kapiri Mposhi, where we learnt about the challenges faced by local communities, particularly the adverse impacts of climate change on their livelihoods. The situation calls for urgent action in implementing adaptation strategies to mitigate these effects and support vulnerable communities. One story we heard was from a farmer who planted 21 bags of maize seed only to harvest nothing. He recounted how the abrupt cessation of rains prevented him from applying fertiliser, as there was no moisture in the soil. He hoped for rain to come, but unfortunately, the season ended without relief. The only visible crops were some soya beans, scattered in his yard. Some of the actions that came in mind are; 1. Co-creating proposals/plans between partners and communities to address the effects of climate change with a mutually agreed agenda. 2. Implementing climate-smart agricultural practices such as conservation agriculture, agroforestry, and water harvesting techniques to enhance resilience to drought and water scarcity. 3. Promoting diversification of livelihoods beyond agriculture and fishing, including activities like village savings groups, small-scale businesses, livestock rearing, and non-farm employment opportunities. #Hivos #VCA

Kihamba Forest Gardens, nestled on Mount Kilimanjaro's slopes in Shimbwe Juu village, are renowned for their multilayered agroforestry system, harboring over 500 plant varieties. This Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) exemplifies traditional wisdom in preserving biodiversity while sustainably managing natural resources. Despite Tanzania's agriculture sector contributing significantly to the GDP, many youths perceive farming as unviable. To address this, FAO provides specialized training through the GIAHS program, empowering local farmers like Remy Temba to enhance crop diversity and yields sustainably. Remy's son, James, highlights the ecological, nutritional, and economic benefits of their traditional cultivation methods, echoing sentiments shared by Elizabeth Kilewo and other villagers. These practices not only sustain livelihoods but also safeguard the environment and Mount Kilimanjaro's vital water resources. Recognizing the importance of rural youth engagement, FAO's advocacy has influenced Tanzania's agricultural policies to prioritize youth involvement and decent rural employment, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 8. As custodians of their heritage, the community's commitment to preserving Kihamba gardens not only ensures food security but also contributes to global efforts in biodiversity conservation and climate resilience. Through GIAHS, traditional farming knowledge continues to thrive, offering sustainable solutions for a changing world and empowering future generations in Tanzania's agricultural landscape. #agroinsurance #happyfriday #fridayfarmers #farmeroftheweek #KihambaForestGardens #Tanzania Video credits: www.human-wrongs-watch.net

Godod Galkacyo Puntland Somalia Mixed Cropping: is a practice that involves growing two or more crops simultaneously on the same piece of land, has gained significant attention in recent years due to its numerous benefits. Mango (Mangifera indica) and watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) are two popular fruit crops that, when grown together, can create a synergistic relationship. Efficient Land Use: Mango trees, being perennial crops, occupy the upper canopy, while watermelons, as annual vines, spread across the ground. Improved Soil Health: Watermelons have a sprawling root system that helps in breaking up the soil enhancing aeration and water infiltration. Pest and Disease Management: Mixed farming can reduce the prevalence of pests and diseases. The diverse plant species create a less favorable environment for pests that typically target monocultures. #ourmission is to cultivate peace and prosperity in Somalia through sustainable agriculture. #worldFoodProgram #FAO #Welthungerhilfe #FoodSecurityStandard #Sustianability
