🌱 Can Vegan Diets Thrive in Semi-Arid Regions? Exploring Sustainable Nutrition in Kimana In Kenya's semi-arid Kimana, Ambokili Farm is leading a transformative journey to prove that plant-based diets can flourish in even the harshest climates. With limited rainfall and challenging ecological conditions, this region presents a unique opportunity to explore how sustainable agriculture can bridge the gap between tradition, culture, and modern nutritional needs. We’re working hand in hand with the Maasai community—renowned for their deep-rooted connection to livestock—to explore a plant-forward approach that respects cultural heritage while embracing the resilience of indigenous crops like amaranth, millet, and moringa. How Are We Making This Possible? Leveraging drought-tolerant crops like sorghum and pigeon peas, which require minimal water yet provide maximum nutrition. Employing sustainable techniques like drip irrigation, mulching, and agroforestry to conserve water and enrich the soil. Promoting community-led workshops to reimagine traditional dishes with plant-based ingredients. Demonstrating the environmental benefits of plant-forward diets, including improved soil health, biodiversity, and water conservation. Why Does This Matter? With climate change exerting increasing pressure on pastoralist lands, exploring adaptive, sustainable diets is more urgent than ever. Ambokili Farm is not just growing crops—it’s growing resilience, equity, and food security. 💡 Could this model redefine plant-based living for arid and semi-arid regions worldwide? 🔗 Our recent blog explores the answers [link in comments] #SustainableFarming #VeganInTheWild #FoodSecurity #AmbokiliFarm #PlantBasedLiving #organic #organicfarming #food #veganism #vegan #healthyfood #farming #livestock #culture #community #communitydevelopment #maasai #pastoralist #ambokilifarm #kimana #kajiadocounty #kenya #global

🌟 Happy Thanksgiving, y'all! 🦃🍂 As we gather to celebrate, there’s even more reason to reflect on the importance of how our food is grown — not just for our planet, but for the health and well-being of what we share at the table. A recent study from Utah State University, commissioned by Regenified™ and Diestel Family Ranch, is a perfect reminder. It shows that turkeys raised with regenerative farming practices don’t just improve soil health 🌱; they’re also nutritionally superior. These birds boast better omega-3 profiles, more antioxidants, and higher levels of vitamins and minerals compared to conventionally raised turkeys. Regenerative agriculture focuses on healing the land through techniques like rotational grazing, reduced tilling, and cover crops. This creates a win-win: healthier ecosystems 🌍 lead to more nutrient-dense food for all of us. These benefits don’t stop with turkeys — similar results have been seen in regenerative beef and other products. It’s inspiring to see brands like Diestel Family Ranch leading the way, proving that better farming practices can make a tangible difference for our health and our planet. This holiday season, let’s think about how our food choices support a sustainable future 🌟. Cheers to healthier soils, healthier foods, and a brighter tomorrow! 🙌 #HappyThanksgiving #RegenerativeAgriculture #Sustainability #FoodForTheFuture #SoilHealth https://lnkd.in/gzn4zj-H

Did you know? Nut trees are part of the lungs of our country. They remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, store carbon, and release oxygen into the air 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This week, we’re thrilled to be sharing our new ‘Sustainability Matters’ report with delegates of the Dietitians Australia conference, in Brisbane! Sustainability has been, and will continue to be, an ongoing priority for the Australian nut industry. Our new ‘Sustainability Matters’ resource provides an overview, for health professionals, on the role of nuts within healthy and sustainable diets. And it also outlines some of the nut industry’s initiatives in: 🌰 Neutralising carbon emissions → Spoiler 1: Did you know that many nut processing facilities - for shelling, cracking, drying, and packing nuts in Australia, are located within growing regions, minimising carbon emissions from transport? 🌰 Careful water use → Spoiler 2: Did you know that nut growers use the latest irrigation management technology to tailor water use to an orchard’s specific needs – based on factors like soil moisture levels? 🌰 Supporting soil health → Spoiler 3: Did you know that within nut orchards, reusing organic matter, like shells, husks, and prunings, is a well-established practice? 🌰 Protecting biodiversity → Spoiler 4: Did you know that it is not unusual for nut growers to set aside a portion of their farm as a conversation zone, which increases biodiversity? Not at the conference? Meet Don Santos Talavera, a valued smallholder farming partner from San Juan del Rio Coco in Nicaragua's San Antonio de Arriba community. His farm is Las Flores, and was incorporated into the Organic Management System of Burke Agro, our independent agricultural development branch, in January 2020. This producer grows our delicious Regenerative Organic Certified® Gros Michel Bananas on his farm as well as coffee. Banana trees are common on coffee plantations in Nicaragua, as the farmers use them for shade. Don Santos Talavera recommends other coffee plantations improve the cultivation of their banana trees and apply regenerative farming practices, as he has seen such vast improvements in his harvests since applying regenerative practices. Before working with us, Don Santos Talavera sold his bananas to Salvadorans, who paid a much lower price for his harvests. Our company provided his farm with a higher price and improved market for his product, continuous training, and certifications that allow them to support their farm and employees. This, in turn, has improved the quality of his family and employee's livelihoods. Our mission is to connect smallholder farmers in Nicaragua with mindful consumers. A really interesting piece from The Guardian supporting what we at North Atlantic know about the benefits of pelagic fish consumption. Switching from red meat to pelagic fish - including herring and sardines - can help prevent diet-related diseases and combat the climate crisis. The research emphasises that increasing fish intake, particularly for low and middle-income countries, is beneficial due to the affordability, availability, and nutritional quality of these fish. It also highlights the need for fish-based food policies and guidelines to support responsible and sustainable fishing businesses in their efforts to encourage pelagic fish consumption and promote healthier and more environmentally friendly choices.
