The potential of macadamia agroforestry for diet diversification, climate change adaptation and mitigation...
🙌The shift away from seasonal, mono-crop farming for members of HIMACUL*, is underway! With support from The Neno Macadamia Trust, these smallholder farmers are building economic, environmental & food security through macadamia agroforestry. By intercropping the hardy macadamia tree with other commodities they: 🌱nurture soil health & support an environment made for long-lasting productivity; 🌱build resilience to changing weather conditions as drought & flooding become increasingly regular; 🌱offer diversity in diet & omega-filled nutrition for their communities: 🌱create alternative economic paths to market, no longer relying on a single crop. Not only that but they: 🌰use the husks for animal feed 🌰shells as an alternative source of firewood. And what does Liberation have to do with it?? Fish farming is the fastest-growing form of food production worldwide. Seafood accounts for around 17% of the world’s protein intake (in some parts of Asia and Africa, the number is nearer 50%). The OECD, a wealthy country club, reckons that thanks to population growth and rising incomes, global fish consumption will reach 180m tonnes by the end of the decade.

Plant parasitic nematodes are becoming a serious problem for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa, many of whom aren’t even aware these pests exist. Often, farmers mistakenly blame crop losses on nutrient deficiencies or diseases. Dr. Hannah Karuri from the University of Embu stresses the importance of raising awareness and providing farmers with sustainable, practical solutions to combat these pests. Instead of relying on expensive chemicals, farmers can adopt methods like crop rotation, cover crops, and organic manure to build healthier, more resilient soil. These approaches not only help control nematodes but also boost crop yields and food security, ensuring a more sustainable future for smallholder farmers. #Agriculture #SmallholderFarmers #SoilHealth #Nematodes #SustainableFarming #FoodSecurity Source - https://lnkd.in/efbAbKun

An important principle to help your vegetables grow better and #produce better over time and for longer. (This applies to most plants). How we harvest them... I had illustrated how to harvest them, taking off the terminal shoot to permit the lateral shoots pick up and flourish . The video below shows results 4days after the first harvest of my backyard okongobong plants. They can last for over 2-3 years, still producing #healthy leaves.(I have Okongobong plants that were planted since April 2021 and are still growing healthy). We must learn Urban agriculture/ Smart Agriculture and promote #gardening/organic farming to better secure our health. No assurance of what we get out there anymore. In spite of the great technological advancement, ancestral #agricultural systems will remain the best practices in terms of whatever climate adaptation or mitigation practices are being advocated for, if we want to consider inclusion in the Just transition narrative. If every community can produce all the #food needed to sustain their population, Hunger and #malnutrition will be tackled. #agriculture #smartagriculture #urbanagriculture FAO World Health Organization African Union The African Climate Foundation African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)

Are you aware that bees Bees are among the most important insects for pollinating crops grown for their fruits, nuts, seeds, fiber, and hay. Bees are considered to be involved in one out of every three bites of food that humans ingest, and they perform around 80% of the pollination. Thus, it is best to avoid using pesticides that will kill or eradicate them; instead, use pesticides responsibly. Indonesian farmers have, in an innovative approach, increased rice production by keeping fish. Since these fish are bred in the paddies upon which rice is cultivated, a natural symbiotic effect ensues. As the fish swim around in the water, they excrete waste that serves as a natural fertilizer to feed the rice. They also serve the purpose of insect control, where it is fed to pests and insects that may cause damage to the rice crop, which otherwise reduces the use of harmful chemicals in growing. This also improves the air quality surrounding the field, making the ecosystem a healthier one. Its method results are impressive, with rice yields shooting up by as much as 10%. This assured method of farming supports better crop production and results in a cleaner farming process that is very efficient. . . . #SustainableFarming #EcoFriendly #RiceFarming #FishFarming #InnovativeAgriculture #PestControl #OrganicFarming #AgriculturalInnovation #EnvironmentalImpact #IncreasedYield #Tribunetrends
