An important principle to help your vegetables grow better and #produce better over time and for longer. (This applies to most plants). How we harvest them... I had illustrated how to harvest them, taking off the terminal shoot to permit the lateral shoots pick up and flourish . The video below shows results 4days after the first harvest of my backyard okongobong plants. They can last for over 2-3 years, still producing #healthy leaves.(I have Okongobong plants that were planted since April 2021 and are still growing healthy). We must learn Urban agriculture/ Smart Agriculture and promote #gardening/organic farming to better secure our health. No assurance of what we get out there anymore. In spite of the great technological advancement, ancestral #agricultural systems will remain the best practices in terms of whatever climate adaptation or mitigation practices are being advocated for, if we want to consider inclusion in the Just transition narrative. If every community can produce all the #food needed to sustain their population, Hunger and #malnutrition will be tackled. #agriculture #smartagriculture #urbanagriculture FAO World Health Organization African Union The African Climate Foundation African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)

Fish farming is the fastest-growing form of food production worldwide. Seafood accounts for around 17% of the world’s protein intake (in some parts of Asia and Africa, the number is nearer 50%). The OECD, a wealthy country club, reckons that thanks to population growth and rising incomes, global fish consumption will reach 180m tonnes by the end of the decade.

The potential of macadamia agroforestry for diet diversification, climate change adaptation and mitigation...
🙌The shift away from seasonal, mono-crop farming for members of HIMACUL*, is underway! With support from The Neno Macadamia Trust, these smallholder farmers are building economic, environmental & food security through macadamia agroforestry. By intercropping the hardy macadamia tree with other commodities they: 🌱nurture soil health & support an environment made for long-lasting productivity; 🌱build resilience to changing weather conditions as drought & flooding become increasingly regular; 🌱offer diversity in diet & omega-filled nutrition for their communities: 🌱create alternative economic paths to market, no longer relying on a single crop. Not only that but they: 🌰use the husks for animal feed 🌰shells as an alternative source of firewood. And what does Liberation have to do with it?? It's these very same, #climatesmart, #nowaste, velvety-rich #macadamia nuts that go into our #Fairtrade Natural Nut mixes! Illustration: Finlay Brazier *Highland Macadamia Co-operative Union Ltd

In Southern Africa, smallholder farmers face a major threat to their livelihoods and food security: soybean rust. This devastating disease can reduce yields by up to 80%, and with climate change increasing its spread, the stakes are higher than ever. A new partnership between Solidaridad, Kvuno, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), and the Soybean Innovation Lab is empowering farmers to tackle this challenge through an Early Warning System. This innovative system sends real-time alerts to farmers when rust is detected in sentinel plots - special monitored areas that act as an early warning for nearby crops. With this timely information, farmers can take swift action to protect their soybeans, ensuring their families and communities have secure food sources. #AgriculturalInnovation #SoybeanRust #FoodSecurity #ClimateResilience #SmallholderFarmers

***Climate Change Impacting Vanilla Supply*** It's intriguing how significant weather disruptions can disrupt the delivate evolutionary adaptations that plants have developed over millions of years to survive. As a consequence, both plants and farmers face reduced harvest volumes and compromised quality, often resulting in higher commodity prices. Here's a recent example of vanilla production in Madagascar. One contributing factor to the high cost of vanilla harvesting is the delicate nature of the pods, which require careful hand-handling. Unlike other crops, vanilla pods cannot be easily mass-sliced and processed through automated machinery; each one must be meticulously tended to by hand, adding to the complexity and cost of production. https://hubs.la/Q02xGfsF0 #climatechange #cropsupply #foodsupplychain #agriculture

Kenya’s Seed Bank Safeguarding Local Crops Amid Climate Challenges Kenya’s Genetic Resources Research Institute, the national seed bank in Kikuyu, has become an essential resource for smallholder farmers facing climate-induced food insecurity. Established in 1988 to conserve traditional crops, the seed bank now supports farmers through the Seeds for Resilience project, launched in 2019 in partnership with Crop Trust. With around 50,000 crop collections, the institute provides climate-resistant, indigenous varieties, such as Kenya’s red-headed sorghum, which have been rediscovered for their resilience against pests and drought. Farmers in Busia County attest to the bank’s impact, noting improved yields and reduced dependence on fertilizers. The seed bank also collaborates with international and national partners to ensure its resources reach farmers across the country. Director Desterio Nyamongo emphasizes the bank’s role in building resilience and protecting biodiversity, underscoring the need for continued support as the climate crisis escalates.
