#METALLURGY QUESTION: Why would #waterjet cutting (known to be low stress) result in warp in Hot Rolled Stainless Steel? I will post "the" answer in a few days to give people a chance to comment. Problem Description: The below image is after waterjet cutting (at my shop, General Machine and Tool Company, Inc.) has been performed to remove some ~0.5in x 40in long parts from a 48in x 12in x 3/8in plate. The material is Stainless Steel 304. In this thickness the material is Hot Rolled / HRAP. After cutting some number of parts, the parts and the plate began to warp. this happened on a second sheet of material as well. The spacing between parts is very thin, to minimize waste, but parts are support by slats of the water jet due to length and were cutting with good quality until the warp. The material came from a US mill.
