Living for 100 Years: Rethinking Education and Community for the Long Haul What would society look like if we routinely lived to 100? It’s not just about the science of longevity but the systems that support it—education, community, and culture all play pivotal roles. Imagine a world where living longer is not just about surviving but thriving. At a recent networking event, we explored The Longevity Project, which challenges us to rethink how our lives unfold if we expect to live a century or more. I’ve written before about the implications of longevity, but today I want to focus on education and community. If we're living longer, how do we ensure that time remains meaningful and engaging? The Educational Challenge: Lifelong Learning Living longer means potentially working longer, but it also means more opportunities to reinvent ourselves. As Ricardo Semler suggests in his TED talk, we need to design education systems that go beyond the traditional “school years.” We must embrace learning that continues throughout life, aligned with personal growth, economic realities, and social engagement. Consider the concept of whole-life learning. Paulo Freire’s educational philosophy encourages us to see learning as a lifelong journey. This approach aligns with the needs of a population that might reinvent careers multiple times in a long life. How do we create systems that allow individuals to contribute meaningfully at each stage of their lives? Community and Culture: Supporting Longevity If we’re going to live for 100 years, how will our communities support us? Social structures, healthcare, and even our work environments will need to evolve. Semler’s idea of breaking away from traditional work models—allowing flexibility, autonomy, and a balance between work and life—provides a glimpse into what this future might look like. A Call for Action: TED and Jersey’s Role Could Jersey become a think tank for longevity, exploring how we shape education and community for a 100-year life? I believe so. Hosting a TED event dedicated to this topic could draw global expertise to our island, sparking innovation and collaboration. We need to align policies, educational systems, and community initiatives to support a longer, more fulfilling life. Key Takeaways: We must redesign education for lifelong learning. Did you know that the number one influence on student achievement is teacher collective efficacy? (Hattie 2023) Teacher collective efficacy is more than the composite of their skills to teach; it is the culture, collaboration, and relational trust within the collective that determines the true strength of their efficacy. Did you also know that while financial compensation is important it is not the number one reason educators leave the profession? They leave because of the stress experienced due to circumstances related to managing student behavior, navigating conflictual relationships with peers and administration, and perceived levels of belonging within the school or district (RAND 2024). Our mission at Opportunity Thrive is to not just keep educators in their job but ensure that the culture in which they work is one where they feel supported and a sense of belonging, so that they can thrive in their efforts to create classrooms that are spaces of belonging and achievement for each student. What’s the real purpose of higher education and how might we tame its wicked challenges? ‘Sometimes we can’t see how we could make a change because we can only see the barriers to doing things differently.… To move forward we need to know, or at least to ask, why are we doing this work? What’s the real purpose? What is it that students want to pay their fees for? What’s the value students gain beyond the economic?’ These are the questions that Professor Claire Hamshire and Neil Barrett rightly argue we need to be asking in HE. But having redefined our ‘why’, how then do we tackle the wicked problems confronting the sector? We have published a set of resources from our Student Engagement Festival, which was hosted online on 14-18 October. The five-day event explored the importance of relationships and connections, the role of effective collaboration, the value to students of a range of engagement options and strategies to help to understand power imbalances.
