Taking a moment to recognize the true meaning behind Memorial Day. It's more than just a holiday; it's a solemn tribute to honor U.S. military personnel who lost their lives serving our nation. Today, we remember the freedom brought by their courage, and it's our duty to honor their memory by upholding the values they fought for. Have you ever wondered what core values the DoD and each Service live by? Here they are: DoD: Duty, Integrity, ethics, honor, courage, and loyalty. Army: Loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. Marine Corps: Honor, courage, and commitment. Navy: Honor, courage, and commitment. Today, you’ll see plenty of stories honoring the troops who stormed Normandy beaches on D-Day. They truly are heroes. But many heroes go unsung. Like the remarkable military logistics and supply chain personnel who repaired France’s shattered railways after D-Day. Without them, Gen. George Patton’s Third Army would have been stuck in Le Mans, could not have reached Paris and could not have blazed across northern France. World War II could have lasted into 1946, resulting in untold additional death and carnage. My latest blog, courtesy of a new book by Christian Wolmar, tells the tale. On December 7, 1941, the United States was thrust into World War II when the Japanese military attacked Pearl Harbor. Admiral Chester W. Nimitz was appointed Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet later that month. He oversaw the Allie's island-hopping campaign to systematically defeat the Japanese-held territories throughout the Pacific Ocean and led pivotal battles, including Midway. When the war ended, Admiral Nimitz became the Chief of Naval Operations. He made one of his more lasting legacies in this role: the Blue Angels. The Blue Angels are the Navy's flight exhibition team. Maybe you have seen them in action with their close-flying diamond formation (18" apart) and high-speed, low-ground maneuverers. Since its founding, a team of six Blue Angel fighter pilots tours the country, headlining airshows. Does the Navy need the Blue Angels? Of course not. The Blue Angel squadron does not make better fighter pilots. The Navy has other training for that. Why then form and keep the Blue Angels? Sometimes you need a little sizzle. Admiral Nimitz saw the general public lose interest and awareness in naval aviation as he led the Navy's post-war transition and demobilization. Pilots are essential to a Naval Fleet's attacking and defensive capabilities. Nimitz's vision was for the Blue Angels to demonstrate the professionalism and skill of naval aviators. Look, we know the memes about runners. We always wear GPS watches and talk about upcoming races and how long we ran this weekend. Does that sound like you? It does me. Remember, though, that you can overdo this, and we should realize (gasp!) that not everyone is as interested in running as we are. But don't lose the sizzle. It's good to remind those around you that you run. Maybe you will inspire them to start running when they see running's tremendous health and mental benefits on you. We're not Admiral Nimitz. What can us ground bound mere mortals learn from the soaring US Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, Blue Angels? A lot as it turns out, including lessons in #leadership and how to build high performing #teams. I recently had the chance to see the new #IMAX Blue Angels #documentary and the awe-inspiring live show at the U.S. Naval Academy in #Annapolis just two days apart. I highly recommend both, but it's probably a little easier to see the documentary also now on #amazonprime than it is to get to the live version. It's a #MasterClass in goal setting, building #trust and #camaraderie, #empowerment, #accountability, #continuousimprovement and as you might imagine when it comes to flying a 16-ton jet at over 400 miles per hour just inches away from others, lots of #communication.
