Hiring high performers takes a lot of work. They typically aren’t going to apply to your open position through a job post or website. They’re already working for successful companies and don’t have a reason to look for anything else. That’s where Ground Up Construction Recruiting comes into play. Part of our job is to proactively build relationships with these types of people and find out what they want next in their career. That way when a job does come along that would interest them, the hard work is already done and we're there to make a connection. We're the middleman that saves you time, money and energy. Give me a shout if your construction company needs Project Managers, Project Engineers, Superintendents, Estimators, or any other construction professional. We got you! #groundupconstructionrecruiting

Last week, PT Ferro welcomed students from JJC's Construction Management class for an inside look at the industry, and they had a question on everyone’s mind: What types of jobs are out there, and where do you start? Meet Alex, one of our Estimator/Project Managers, who shared insights on why he loves his role: “One of the things I enjoy most about my role is the variety of projects we tackle each year. Chicagoland has one of the fastest-paced construction industries in the nation, and it’s rewarding to drive around with friends and family, seeing the roads and bridges we’ve built. We’re literally paving the way for the future. Each day brings new challenges that strengthen us as a team. Field changes happen often—sometimes what looks perfect on paper shifts in real life, and we have to adapt on the spot. It keeps us sharp and ready for anything.” Alex’s advice for those starting out? “Go for it! Walk into a construction company and apply in person. Making that face-to-face connection is powerful—don’t just apply online and wait. Show you’re eager and ready to learn!” If you're passionate about building the future, like Alex, a career in construction as a project manager or estimator might be the perfect fit for you! #PTFerro #ConstructionCareers #FutureBuilders

Get to know our VP Of Operations: Sean Hansen! How Did Your Career In Construction Start And How Has It Shaped Your Views Of Construction Safety? "I have been connected to construction since I was a kid, my dad was a superintendent. When I was in middle school and high school, I started getting to follow him to work now and again. That was my initial exposure to the construction industry. After college, I was looking to start my career so I fell back on my construction knowledge. I started working as a union laborer and it has evolved since then. I went from being a union laborer to a Project Engineer, then Assistant Superintendent, Superintendent, Field Operations Manager, Director of Construction and now I am the VP of Operations for Technical Builders. In terms of how that has shaped my views of safety: having been someone who started their career in the field getting dirty and doing the work, gives you firsthand exposure to what a safe job site feels like and what a job site that's not safe feels like. It's a significant and impactful difference. So I have always strived, since the beginning, to create job site environments that allow people to feel safe. And when your workers and team feel safe on the job site, that's when you get the best from them. I think that my firsthand experience is what has shaped my perspective on safety. Keith Buck, PE, one of our Site/Civil Project Managers is this weeks #staffspotlight. He is involved in site/civil design, the proposal process, and spreads his wisdom through mentoring efforts. Hear more from Keith below! Role: Project Manager in our Site/Civil Engineering Department Years of Experience: 25+ Years Years at Etica Group: 3 Years How do your services fit into the entire project lifecycle? I am still involved in the design process for most of the projects. But I am taking on more of a role in the proposal process, the contract and invoicing processes, and delegating. I also do a fair amount of mentoring to the younger engineers…imparting as much wisdom as I can. What excites you about the work you do? I’ve always seen projects as big, sometimes very complicated, puzzles, and I like putting the pieces together. I get a great sense of accomplishment when we finish a project, and we know it’s been well done. How would you describe the culture? I’ve worked for some good companies throughout my career, but I do not hesitate to say that this is the best environment I’ve ever worked in. This includes the facilities, involvement from upper management, camaraderie with my colleagues, etc. But most importantly, the commitment to a work-life balance. It was a promise I made (to myself) when I came on board and it has been kept.

Projects and profits often define the construction industry. But at Baker, it’s people who define our company. A lot of companies are more concerned about their books or that marquee project than they are about a consistent pipeline that allows their people to develop and to provide for their families. We strategically take projects so our project managers and superintendents can assure their teams that there’s no disruption in the flow of work, and that their teams will have a pathway to a steady career. We know that the more we expand through careful growth, the more opportunities we can offer to talented people. And the more careers, safety, and stability we’re going to be able to create.
