Building, operating, and maintaining any power generation project requires a high level of electrical safety awareness, training, technical skills, knowledge, and the personal discipline to always act in a safe manner. ACP has released draft Guidelines for Entry-Level Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Technician Training and is seeking public comment from ACP members, training institution colleges, trade schools and industry players. The Entry-Level BESS Technician Guidelines will establish a transparent and valid set of standardized skills for entry level technician roles in operations and maintenance for BESS facilities. These guidelines will help: - Alleviate the continued pressure on costs and resources - Reduce bottlenecks in training - Provide a stable, competent entry level workforce - Reduce recruitment constraints by knowledgeable entry level O&M technicians ready for company qualifications and experience - Decrease training duplication - Reduce the pressure on recruitment and training. POWER FACTOR MONITORING As an electrical technician, your responsibilities should include: #Regularly Monitoring Power Factor: Implement a routine monitoring program to measure and track the power factor at various points in the plant's electrical distribution system. #Identifying and Addressing Issues: Analyze the power factor data to identify any areas with low power factor and investigate the underlying causes, such as the operation of inductive loads or capacitive effects. #Implementing Corrective Measures: Recommend and implement appropriate corrective measures, such as the installation of power factor correction capacitors, to improve the overall power factor and optimize the plant's energy efficiency. #Maintaining Power Factor Correction Equipment: Ensure that any power factor correction equipment, such as capacitor banks, are properly maintained and functioning correctly. #Educating Plant Personnel: Provide training and guidance to plant operators and other personnel on the importance of power factor and the steps they can take to maintain a high power factor. By constantly monitoring and maintaining the power factor in the processing plant, the electrical technician can contribute to significant energy savings, improved equipment performance, and overall cost-effectiveness for the facility.

Understanding the root cause of issues is more than just a troubleshooting exercise—it’s about preventing future problems, ensuring safety, and improving the overall reliability of the system. Taking the time to dig deeper, rather than applying a quick fix. Here’s what I have learned working as an Electrical Technician at Matrix Group Energy 🔹 Patience and Observation: Take a step back and look at the big picture. What signs were there before the failure? Was it a gradual issue or a sudden shutdown? 🔹 Data and Documentation: Use all available data—previous fault records, maintenance logs, and even minor observations from operators. Some Patterns can emerge that might not be visible at first glance. 🔹 Collaborate with Others: Sometimes, the solution lies outside the electrical domain. Communicating with other departments can shed light on underlying factors that contribute to the problem. 🔹 Never Assume: Even when a solution seems obvious, it’s worth verifying.
