Smile Generation met Empowered Network at the Engage for Good conference in May. We discussed the intersection between mouth trauma and trafficking victims, the high cost of dental work that often makes it inaccessible to survivors, and the societal barriers/career ceilings surrounding employment opportunities that exist for people with solvable but expensive dental needs such as missing or rotting teeth. Katie Blessing (whose last name could not be more accurate) told me about Serve Day—an annual effort by hundreds of their offices to provide trauma-informed, quality dental work to marginalized populations at no cost. I immediately got the chills. Fast forward: tomorrow, 16 trafficking survivors working with Empowered Network will receive complimentary dental care that will address chronic pain, protect them from future medical issues, increase their confidence, and open more doors professionally, helping them achieve their economic goals. Corporate intersections with societal problems exist in abundance. There is tremendous power in partnering with organizations on real-world solutions and positive change. We are so jazzed for this life-transforming partnership!

I had a lovely time presenting some of our work assessing the domain/context-specific relationships between physical activity and cardiometabolic health at the Society of Behavioral Medicine's Annual Meeting in Philadelphia this past week! The theme of the conference was moving behavioral medicine "upstream", which agrees well with the aims of our work and general outlook on eliciting lasting behavior change. More specifically, the environments and systems in which we exist act as strong forces; either facilitating or creating barriers to engaging in health-promoting behaviors. In this way, the problems we face as individuals and, more importantly, as a population (e.g., food insecurity, physical inactivity, etc.), are likely ameliorated through progressive policy and systems-level change. While improving the systems and environments we exist in is wonderful (and necessary!) to improve population health and reduce health inequities, this is incredibly challenging in practice, with so many stakeholders - each with their own individual priorities - a truly interdisciplinary approach is needed, and one that I, in addition to the wonderful student scholars I met this week, am committed to in my future work. As these environmental and systems-level changes take time, I do think it's also important to support organizations that are helping to alleviate the negative consequences of our current systems RIGHT NOW. Here are some local organizations I support. Consider supporting them, or your own local organizations, either with your time and/or financially: MilWALKee Walks: https://lnkd.in/gfmgts9f Kinship Community Food Center: https://lnkd.in/ggHUJ6sP Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity: https://lnkd.in/gKeeaiVs

We are supporting University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus researchers, led by principal investigator: Joshua Barocas, MD, in launching a new NIDA-funded study that will develop simulation models to evaluate interventions aimed at reducing the profound health effects related to the experience of homelessness. Compared to people in the U.S. who are stably housed, those who experience homelessness die on average 30 years earlier. This evaluation will focus on two cities where homelessness is at crisis levels – Denver, which has seen an increase in homelessness of more than 30% since 2022, and San Francisco, which has the highest prevalence of homelessness in the U.S. https://bit.ly/3DglHYN

In this episode with Haylie Pomroy Jaime Seltzer, Director of Scientific and Medical Outreach at The #MEAction Network, discusses the reality of living with ME/CFS. ME/CFS is much more than just being tired. Even simple activities like going to the mall or watching a movie can leave someone exhausted for days. She emphasizes that ME/CFS affects every part of life, and understanding this can help bring more compassion to those who live with the condition.
