Our latest paper showcases how liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) can revolutionize pheromone analysis in honey bee research!. Since the initial description of queen mandibular pheromone (QMP) in 1988, studies have relied heavily on GC-MS. Our research demonstrates that QRP components are compatible with LC-MS/MS, allowing for the simultaneous detection of pheromones and a wide range of other biologically relevant compounds, such as prostaglandins and thromboxanes. The spectral data are openly accessible at the #metabolomicsworkbench (ST003101, doi: 10.21228/M81B11), allowing for further analysis or improvements in annotation as new pathways are discovered and new standards and annotation technologies become available. This comprehensive dataset will serve as a valuable resource for ongoing exploration. https://lnkd.in/grChtWeD

What is #life? A very big question – and part of the answer might be in very small living systems: #bacteria. Initially discounted as simple “bags of molecules”, so-called biomolecular #condensates – dynamic, membraneless assemblies of proteins, nucleic acids and other biomolecules – have recently been recognized to play important roles in regulating bacterial processes. Since such condensates are abundant in all forms of life, they’re hypothesized to have been incubators for emerging life. Wade Schnorr and Seth Childers (University of Pittsburgh) discuss selected examples from both bacterial cell biology and systems chemistry research, showcasing how chemical reactions are closely linked to condensate phase separation and vice versa. They reinforce the case that biomolecular condensates could have been critical in the transition from matter to life, opening up exciting avenues for further research. Our Pick of the Week, published #OpenAccess in #ChemSystemsChem: "Biomolecular Condensates: From Bacterial Compartments to Incubator Spaces of Emergent Chemical Systems in Matter-to-Life Transitions" https://ow.ly/nmCp50S9Vjn Part of the "Systems Chemistry Talents" collection: https://ow.ly/HSxn50S9Vt3

Multi-angle light scattering (MALS), a technique that calculates molecular weight and size through the measurement of light scattered across many angles, is a powerful tool that has become ubiquitous in recent years. In this webinar, Steve Rosa and Lorena Lopez Peña of Agilent Technologies will investigate the main uses of MALS, including molecular weight determination, aggregation screening, molecular size, and shape. They will also showcase the new 1260 MALS detector from Agilent and examine some use cases seen with academic and industrial collaborators to demonstrate the wide variety of MALS applications and configurations, highlighting the benefits such a detector can add to macromolecular research.
