World Soil Day, observed annually on December 5, highlights the vital role of soil in sustaining life on Earth. Established by the United Nations, it promotes awareness of soil's importance for food security, sustainable agriculture, and environmental health. Soil supports plant growth, filters water, stores carbon, and sustains biodiversity, making it essential for combating climate change and ensuring ecosystem balance. The day encourages actions to protect soil from threats like erosion, pollution, and degradation. The 2024 theme, “Soils: Where Food Begins,” emphasizes soil’s crucial role in producing safe, nutritious food for a growing global population while preserving natural resources.

🔴 LIVE Future food security and farmer livelihoods are under threat from climate and biodiversity collapse. And yet the Common Agricultural Policy (the #CAP) - the EU's largest tool for change - is stuck in the past and fuelling the fire (as well as the floods and the drought…🔥🌊). Decades of archaic policy has resulted in unfair subsidies that benefit vast agribusinesses at the expense of everyone else and the environment on which we depend. The time for positive change is now and policymakers have a unique opportunity to build on the consensus report recently agreed upon by farmers, NGOs, industry and consumer groups. By implementing their recommendations, we can pave the way for a sustainable, fair and resilient future of EU agriculture.
