Do you know what does a structural engineer can do? This is Madeira airport, named after Cristiano Ronaldo (about those who realise impossible things): planes land on an elevated runway! There was not enough room for an airstrip, that was the problem. The role of engineers is to solve problems and in the video we see the solution. Yes, engineers make possible what others can only imagine. But how much knowledge, how much experience, how much engineering skill is needed to achieve these results? And how much engineering is there everywhere if you look around? Do you know? 📽 by Madeira Aviation #everywherengineering #structuralengineering #engineering #engineer

The challenge of hydrofoil craft design is knowing at what speed the hull becomes fully foil borne. The titanium hydrofoils generate lift. Lift force is directly proportional to density of fluid medium, lift coefficient & the square of velocity. The Holy Grail is getting the boat to go foil borne at as slow a speed as possible. Once the hull is lifted clear out of the water, the hump is overcome & there is a drop in resistance. Consequently, powering requirement drops. Surmounting the hump with minimum powering is the elusive goal. Lift force varies with the square of velocity. So doubling speed quadruples lift. But the power speed curve follows an exponential or power law. So for every 1 knot gain in speed, the powering requirement increases exponentially. The fluid stream particles (streamlines) travel over the upper and lower surfaces of the hydrofoil at different velocities. Low speed, high pressure & high speed, low pressure. This pressure differential is what generates the lift force. Justin Wee & Associates Pte Ltd (JWA) is a ship design and naval architectural firm in Singapore. Live news from Day 2 at Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo in Amsterdam, Netherlands: Echandia's battery dimensioning tool for naval architects and engineers Echandia (Booth 3040) has debuted WattWizard, a helpful tool for heavy-duty maritime electrification battery dimensioning, at this year’s show. Naval architects and engineers can simply enter the relevant vessel data into the tool early in the design process to optimize battery sizing and ensure efficient performance. The tool analyzes the vessel’s typical operating conditions, including speed, load and duration. This information helps determine the energy needed for propulsion and auxiliary systems. “We’ve chosen Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo to launch our new dimensioning tool that we’ve chosen to call WattWizard,” said Felix Backgård, technical sales manager, Echandia. “It’s for naval architects, system integrators or owners to use at an early stage, although it could be at a late stage, too, to help them figure out what size battery they need. Ideally, you would use it at an early stage, because then you can do a lot of iteration on your design and really explore the options.” It's not too late to attend the show! Naval Architect: Designing the Future of Marine Vessels Naval architects play a pivotal role in shaping the future of maritime operations by designing innovative and efficient marine vessels. This specialized field combines engineering, design, and creativity to develop ships and offshore structures that meet the evolving demands of the maritime industry. While I am not a naval architect, my experience in the maritime sector has given me a deep appreciation for their critical contributions. Naval architects are responsible for the conceptualization, design, and construction of various types of vessels, including cargo ships, passenger ferries, and naval ships. They work closely with marine engineers and other specialists to ensure that the vessels are safe, efficient, and compliant with international regulations. Their designs must account for hydrodynamics, structural integrity, stability, and propulsion systems, among other factors. One of the most exciting aspects of naval architecture is the innovation driving the industry forward. Advances in materials science, such as the use of lightweight composites and high-strength alloys, are allowing for the construction of stronger and more fuel-efficient vessels. In recent years, there has been a significant focus on developing eco-friendly designs. Naval architects are at the forefront of creating vessels that minimize environmental impact. This includes designing hulls that reduce drag, incorporating energy-efficient propulsion systems, and utilizing renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. Digitalization and the use of advanced simulation tools are also transforming naval architecture. Modern design software enables naval architects to create detailed 3D models and run complex simulations to predict how a vessel will perform under various conditions. Reflecting on my interactions with naval architects, I have seen how their work impacts every aspect of maritime operations. Their designs not only enhance the efficiency and safety of vessels but also contribute to the overall success of maritime ventures. One personal insight I can share is the collaborative nature of naval architecture. Designing a vessel requires input from various stakeholders, including shipowners, operators, and regulatory bodies. Effective communication and collaboration are essential to ensure that the final design meets all requirements and expectations. I have witnessed how successful projects result from close cooperation between naval architects and the broader maritime team, leading to innovative and practical solutions. The role of a naval architect is continuously evolving, driven by technological advancements and changing industry needs. To employers, my background in the maritime industry and understanding of the critical role of design and innovation position me well to appreciate and support your needs. Let’s connect. #naval_architect #designing_vessels #innovation #Saleh_Bayagoob
