**Reflections on the MyWay Strategy Summit for Family Businesses in Berlin** I had the opportunity to attend the second MyWay summit in Berlin, a two-day event dedicated to the future of family businesses. Accompanied by my colleague Florian Österle, we found ourselves in a number of enriching conversations. However, many of the presentations were tainted by what I can only describe as excessive pessimism—something I find quite typical in these settings. **Key Themes:** - 🌈 The summit was colorful, diverse, and future-focused, with plenty of exciting ideas and forward-looking discussions. - 🏭 Many attendees represented major industrial companies from Southern Germany and the Ruhr area, adding weight to the dialogue. - 🚨 Concerns about Germany’s competitiveness were front and center, focusing on education, migration, integration, and *Enkelfähigkeit* (sustainability for future generations). - 📱 Digitalization took the spotlight, while sustainability was largely framed by concerns over overwhelming regulation. - 😔 Despite the innovative content, there was a lot of defeatism – a very German trait. The motto of the event, *“Zukunft kommt von Zuversicht”*, reflects this mindset. *Zuversicht*, for me, lacks the curiosity, excitement, and playfulness that should come with looking towards the future. Historically, progress has been continuous, but the German interpretation of *Zuversicht* feels more like resigned hope, burdened by nostalgia and a fear that the best days are behind us. **What’s Missing:** This summit showed that while we recognize the challenges, we often overlook our capacity to solve them. Reflecting on an interesting week in climate tech 🌍✨ March ended with two notable events: - ChangeNOW, the planet's largest gathering dedicated to actionable solutions, attracted an impressive crowd of 35,000 attendees. - The Top Tier Impact Europe OpenHouse, an official side event of ChangeNOW, featured three panels with over 150 participants. Highlights included: - 25/03: A panel on enhancing the impact of investors and asset managers, featuring insights from leaders at EcoVadis, Sycamore Partners, SWEN Capital Partners, and more. - 26/03: The "Disruptive Impact Entrepreneurship" session showcased six innovative startups pitching to a VC panel including: Andre Lorenceau, Sabine Andria, Tiphaine Guerout, Nicolas Weber, Alex Haag, Francois Thierart. - 27/03: Discussions focused on how large companies can amplify their impact, with contributions from executives at Monoprix, Kering, and Bouygues Group, among others. I had the privilege of serving on the jury for the startup pitching event, alongside esteemed investors such as Vincent BRILLAULT, Alice Lauriot dit Prévost, Jahed Momand, Romain Diaz and Dr. Terhi (TJ) Vapola. I want to extend my gratitude to Pierre Lorenceau🌳 and the entire #TTI team for orchestrating such a remarkable event. The caliber of startups was exceptional, showcasing cutting-edge solutions in fields such as AI for #agritech, #biodiversity, #circulareconomy, #energyoptimization, and even #autonomous train systems. Great conversations and keynotes at the House of Startups Luxembourg! 🚀 Last Friday, we were represented by Jonathan Livescault at an event with 30+ innovation leaders from the Luxembourg Open Innovation Club. Jonathan had the opportunity to give a keynote speech focusing on "Generating Predictable Innovation Results" and comparing it to sales departments and VC firms. His key takeaways at a glance: ▪ 94% of executives are dissatisfied with their innovation performance and unconvinced by innovation results. ▪ Innovation can't be left to chance. A systematic approach is the only way to get results. ▪ 10 Commandments for Success: Strategize, Time, Centralize, Process, Coach, Measure, Govern, Manage, Report, Improve. ▪ 25% of innovation teams have already started implementing this approach; you should start today. ▪ You can't guarantee your management 100% success, because innovation is inherently risky. 🌟 Reflections on Oslo Innovation Week 🌟 What an amazing three days in Oslo! 😍 Although I was only able to attend the first half of the Innovation Week, I walked away energized from all the insights, learnings and thought-provoking discussions. A few key takeaways stood out: 💡 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals who share your vision is key. As they say, you’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with, so make sure those are the people that support you to reach new heights. 💥 𝘌𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦. It’s about taking risks, thinking big, and having the courage to pursue opportunities that don’t yet exist. Founders need to be able to imagine a bold future and then create a credible roadmap on how to get there. 🎯𝘚𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦. Securing funding isn’t just about the pitch; it’s about building strong relationships, understanding what investors are looking for, and demonstrating the right momentum. Whether it's finding the right venture capital fit or leveraging your early-stage investors for introductions, strategy and timing are everything. One of the highlights of the week was the panel discussion I had with Viktoria Hensler, Anna Munthe-Kaas and Lars Johan Bjørkevoll about building an optimal environment for impact startups in the Nordics. It reminded me that we’re all part of something bigger than ourselves, and that while it’s the collective effort that will continue to push sustainable innovation forward in Nordics and beyond, we all need to act as individuals as well. Finally, a huge shoutout to the incredible people I got to meet in all the many events. It’s clear that the future of the Nordic startup ecosystem is bright, bold, and full of opportunities. Paperspell on the #BelTechGlobal 2.0 BelTechGlobal 2.0 took place in Warsaw again this year, marking its second edition in 2023. The event moved to a larger venue — the conference hall at CIC Warsaw  — allowing for a comfortable and productive atmosphere, even with the growing number of participants. 🤝 One of the most memorable talks was presented by Pavel Daneyko: "Belarus as a forge of high-tech businesses: Does the national high-tech sector have a future?" We are optimistic about the future of Belarus' IT industry, especially after engaging with so many enthusiastic individuals during the event. It’s reassuring to see our confidence backed by data and real-world results. The conference provided numerous meaningful interactions: - Practiced our elevator pitch with Yury Shlahanau and received valuable feedback for further refinement. - Explored opportunities in the German market with Daniel Krutzinna. - Discussed the growth of Angels Band in Poland and the inspiring topic of eco-villages with Valery Astrynski. Both discussions were insightful and heart-warming!) Next Steps 💪Make it happen! We’ll be working on implementing the feedback we received, expanding our network, and gearing up for our product’s release. And, of course, planning the next BelTechGlobal! According to Dmitry Danilchuk, the next event might take place in Cyprus! So, let’s start preparing those residence permits, book tickets, and don’t forget the SPF.
