On Political events vs Corporate As business leader, I attend corporate events while not being regular in political events I get invited to. Being privy to backroom minds, here are differences: 1) Extremity A Political event is a tense situation where managerial skills, patience and paranoia are tested to EXTREME. A person with political instincts comfortable in crowd, managing VIP egos, keeping press in good humour while ensuring security details aren’t pissed is a challenge. A rally is HUGE. All this when managing stage and policing venue to ensure no untoward incident maligns image of party. 2) Uncertainty A corporate event in a luxurious setting comes with a niche audience. Not a rally where variables are high and stakeholders higher as world (read: Media with scores of camera) watches. Any goof up is magnified. What if one lone-man holds placard against leader? 3) Free for all While corporate events are entry by registration, rally is free for all. Unlike corporate with hierarchy and systems defined, political upmanship is about defying and grabbing power. Control is not a given and systems are non-existent making managing an uphill task. No wonder, politicians end up authoritarian as that’s what they are forced to learn at grassroots. ABW series Amit Bhagwan Wadhwani
