5 unwritten rules for business communication In matters concerning corporate communication, highest standards of professionalism is expected in order to make a positive impression. Here are unwritten rules to be followed stringently: - 1. Usefulness No communication should be initiated without purpose and conveying the same clearly would save time and impress upon the contact. A more informal way can be adopted for regular business connects once a working relation or friendship is established. 2. Choose right medium Choosing medium appropriate to conversation as well as importance of person and message is essential part of communication. Sometimes putting things on record would be requisite from legal point of view too. 3. Keep it simple Always assume the receiver has 100 other emails to respond or 100 other phone calls to take. Keep it simple and clear in minimum words. 4. Edit out Generic stuff It’s tempting to start with “Industry is growing at …….. GDP is blah blah.” Unless it’s part of full-fledged presentation or article, don’t indulge in generic statements in routine communication. 5. Using Jargons Use Jargons if it simplifies explanation and enhances understanding when communicating within the industry. Otherwise using it sparingly would be recommended. ABW #sai
