Nanoplastics (NPs) are everywhere and pose a risk to human health. Another excellent chapter of Miao Peng's PhD is now published. In this recent study, we focussed on long-term exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics. We observed impaired mitochondrial function and cell differentiation in human intestinal cells. We particularly noticed that short-term effects are transient, but repeated exposure leads to significant damage. Micro- and nanoplastics research is inherently multidisciplinary requiring a battery of lab equipment and methodologies for each study. Hence a big thank you to our collaborators offering their unique expertise for this study on seahorse analyzer (Andreja Rajkovic, Professor, ICFMH president, ex IAAS & Charlotte Grootaert), flow cytometry (Nico Boon) and offcourse my excellent colleagues who are part of the team: Maaike Vercauteren and Colin Janssen. 𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 is part of the field of precision medicine, which aims to treat each patient individually. Patients respond differently to the same medication, due to individual genetic differences factors change. It’s long-term goal is to offer treatment strategies tailored to each individual patient by selecting the drugs and doses best suited for each person. Yet, 𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 (PGx) allele frequencies and function differ substantially across different biogeographic groups. Awareness of these differences and increased efforts to characterize the spread of global PGx variation are needed to ensure the right implementation of 𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬. 𝐀 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞: 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐧® 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 A recent publication reports on our international #clinicaltrial to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of #Silexan®, a proprietary lavender oil preparation, in the treatment of mild to moderate depressive episodes. A total of 498 patients with a diagnosis of mild to moderate #depressive disorder were treated for 8 weeks with either Silexan®, placebo (i.e., a dummy drug) or sertraline (i.e., an established synthetic prescription antidepressant). At the end of treatment, the depressive symptoms had improved considerably and statistically significantly more with Silexan® treatment compared to placebo treatment. The antidepressant effects of Silexan® were clinically significant and as convincing as those of sertraline. Thus, these new and clinically highly relevant results prove the #antidepressant efficacy of Silexan® in mild or moderate major depressive disorder.
