As a Maintenance Technician with hands-on experience in industrial machinery and solar systems, I’ve come to appreciate that effective maintenance isn't just about technical expertise—it's about the intimate, practical knowledge gained through years of experience. This connects with a key concept from Donna Haraway’s work on “situated knowledges.” Haraway emphasizes that knowledge is often grounded in specific contexts and experiences. In maintenance, this means that the "know-how" we develop through physically working with machines and systems can’t be fully captured by manuals or theories. It’s an embodied expertise, cultivated by troubleshooting, repairs, and the real-time decisions we make on the job. For me, studying Culture and Change: Critical Studies of Humanities at Malmo University has deepened my understanding of how valuable this kind of practical knowledge is, especially in dynamic industries like renewable energy and industrial operations. As we move towards more sustainable solutions, the ability to blend theoretical knowledge with hands-on, situated expertise is critical for ensuring the longevity and efficiency of our systems.
