🛑 Reality Check 🛑 I finally attended my first YPE SF Bay Area event and it was all about VPPs (it’s what we Hindi speakers call ‘Sone-pe-Suhaga’ - roughly translates to "icing on the cake" or "cherry on top"). 🍰 The panel was hosted by Astrid Atkinson, Smriti Mishra, and Vish Ganti and moderated by Yang Yu who essentially arranged the entire discussion sequentially from - Where VPPs are NOW, Where they NEED to be, and HOW we GET there. 🧩 One of the highlights for me was in answering every question, we had access to 3 perspectives in working in different sections of the ecosystem, with Qcells USA Corp. as manufacturers, WeaveGrid helping accelerate electrification by optimizing EV charging with utilities (and Vehicle OEMs too !) and Camus Energy operating at the center of DER and utility data. It was awesome to see how the pieces of the ‘new’ grid puzzle fit and the areas where the next iteration of improvements will come from. 🧩 🛠️ Another takeaway I had from the talk was that hardware deployment and maturity are slightly lagging behind software solutions as of now in terms of the large scale proliferation of VPPs. Building effective supply chains and deploying effective ‘smart’ hardware with a standardized data reporting and sharing policy seems like the way forward. Till then, the reliance will remain on meter data or aggregations of all individual DERs (thermostats, water heaters, energy storage, EV chargers etc). 🛠️ (I want to shout out the ‘smart panel’ manufacturers because their products can make it much simpler for the ecosystem.) 🙌 💰 Finally, I loved the discussion about the financial viability of the current VPP product. “DR is still the most important DER” was a common theme here but I loved the feasibility analysis of expanding the services VPP programs can provide for grid stability and how these software platforms and their customers should be adequately compensated for it. 💰 This was my first YPE SF Bay Area event and I met a lot of amazing people there too who explained to me about how this organization works (shoutout to Michael, Jenny, Jenya, and Reena) and it’s clear to me now why any energy enthusiast in the Bay Area should definitely come to their events ! 🔋👏
