The climate crisis and a very serious drought and water shortage looms over Greece's tourism over-development. Since October, rainfall in some of the islands has been 40% lower than usual, said Kostas Lagouvardos, research director at the National Observatory of Athens. “So, that’s a big problem.” The situation looks to be coming to a head as August’s peak tourist season approaches — where demand for water will be highest — and dry, hot weather looks set to continue. “Many other islands will face problems during this period if we don’t take measures,” said Lagouvardos. #ClimateCrisis #ClimateEmergency #EndFossilFuels #BeyondFossilFuels #ClimateAction #RestoreNature #LivingPlanet

Island and coastal communities are particularly at risk from climate change. On a small island off Panama's Caribbean coast, about 300 Guna families are preparing to relocate to the mainland due to rising sea levels. Gardi Sugdub is the first of 63 communities expected to be displaced by climate change in the coming decades. The island is part of the Guna Yala territory, consisting of around 50 inhabited islands. Each year, especially during November and December, high winds cause the sea to flood homes and streets. Despite efforts to reinforce the island’s edges, seawater continues to encroach. Steven Paton from the Smithsonian Institution highlights that the move is a direct result of climate change, predicting that all 50 islands will need to be abandoned by the end of the century. Coastal and marine tourism represents at least 50% of total global tourism. https://lnkd.in/gu7pSBfw #climatechange #tourism

When you live in a regional community you see the impact that the weather/climate has on community wellbeing. It's always a rollercoaster but it's becoming more and more unpredictable, largely due to anthropogenic climate change 🎢 How does that relate to what we do? Well... • We have to firstly select hardy species that don't use much or any water once established. • We create places that bring communities together for social interaction. • We support diversification of economies in regional areas. Tourism in sustainable amounts can be a great supplementary income to agriculture in drier years, and good old authentic country hospitality has a lot to offer. Here's hoping the season breaks soon, after the driest start to the year in S/SW Australia on record 🙏🏼🌅 #regionalaustralia #landscape #planning #Australia

Environmental Degradation Poses Threats to Freetown Peninsula By Kanu Beejet Hassan, Climate Change Ambassador The Freetown Peninsula, once renowned as a jewel of Sierra Leone's tourism, now faces critical threats from environmental degradation, climate change, and unsustainable human activities. Its pristine golden beaches are increasingly impacted by coastal erosion, pollution, and unchecked development, all of which undermine their allure to visitors. Immediate conservation measures are essential to safeguard these natural treasures. Beyond their scenic beauty, the beaches play a vital role in supporting local livelihoods, promoting biodiversity, and sustaining the tourism economy. Protecting Freetown's coastline is essential not only for preserving its ecological health but also for ensuring the longevity of sustainable tourism in Sierra Leone. #MinistryofLands #ministerofenvironmentandclimatechange #Ministryofplanning #vicepresidentofsierraleone #immigration #NATCA #ministeroftrade #firstladyofsierraleone #FreetownCityCouncil #UNDP #NDMA #shoutclimatechangeafrica #vicepresidentofsierraleone #chiefministerofsierraleone #PresidentBio #pulitzergrant #WorldBank #worldhealthorganization #sierraleonemaritimeadministration #MDAS #CSO #NGOs #UnitedNations #AfricaUnion #ministerofdefence #moped #MinisterofTourism #MinisterOfForeignAffairs https://lnkd.in/dWpaHWhe

Cooling off in the pool on a summer holiday on a Greek island? This could soon only be possible to a limited extent. Many Greek islands are suffering from an acute water shortage due to low rainfall and a mild winter. Reservoir supplies are running low and there is no improvement in sight. The "good" thing about this situation is that the islands have discovered innovations in the field of #watermanagement in order to continue to have sufficient water available. These approaches include the #desalination of seawater as well as the intelligent treatment of waste water. This is a great example of using #AdaptationTech solutions to adapt to a +2°C world. We have compiled further examples of how AdaptationTech solutions are already helping to adapt to climate change in our white paper "Technologies for a climate resilient future" which can be downloaded here: https://lnkd.in/d2CFvP8G
